Volunteer Position: Men’s Testing Night Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in the Calgary Sexual Health Centre. We are a non-profit agency that offers information, referral, support, education and outreach services that help people experience positive sexual and reproductive health.

Dedicated volunteers have been the key to our work and success since our beginning in 1972. By offering valuable time, knowledge, and insight, volunteers link us to the community and make it possible for us to provide high quality programs.

Responsibilities: The Men’s Testing Night volunteer supports the clients and staff at our weekly HIV/STI testing service for gay, bi, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) with Safeworks. They will perform administrative duties related to bookings, assist drop-in clients, assist the nurses in clinic management, and answer client questions. This position takes place on Thursday evenings between 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm.

Main responsibilities:

 Assisting in setting up the space before testing begins (tidying, ensuring condoms are out, etc.)

 Greeting clients at the front desk

 Checking in those with appointments and ensuring they have completed any necessary intake documents

 Registering walk ins on the waitlist and ensuring intake documents are completed

 Answering questions of clients about testing procedure and other services

 Answering phone calls from clients, letting them into the building and up the elevator

 Managing waiting room space, ensuring a comfortable environment for clients

 Assisting the Safeworks nurses in managing patient order and services

 Referring clients to additional specialized services when necessary

 Assisting the Gay Men’s Health Specialist with other tasks as required

Skills and Knowledge Requirements

 Relevant education/experience  Interest in sexual health and gay, bi, and MSM’s health issues

 Comfortable talking about sexuality and HIV/STI testing

 Excellent communication skills

 Ability to work independently

 Pro-choice philosophy

 Attention to detail

All positions involve an agency orientation and ongoing training sessions
