December 2014 EDITOR – Kevin Breen (If you have any Items of Interest please E-mail [email protected] or Phone 9772 2824) Thanks to all those who sent in articles etc What’s (been) on Christmas Party 29th Nov.

Executive Director: Ian Thomas Board Secretary: W. Trupke FROM the BOARD: FROM the BOARD for December 2014 A MERRY XMAS to all Members and their Families – New Year will be soon after so all the best health, wealth and happiness for 2015. The end few months have snuck up on all of us and the Board has been kept busy with plenty of things happening. Let me share. NO SMOKING -  We have decided to enforce the No Smoking Policy with a bit more rigour. Mainly because of the State Laws on Smoking & Sport we have to not smoke in sight of junior players. Although the Board doesn’t support smoking on the premises (it is against our Lease) we have set aside some areas “out of sight” through the BBQ gate near the water tanks and in the grassed car park area. This has been done this way to reduce disruptions to Pennant games and in an attempt to stop smoking on the veranda or having people standing outside the front gate. PLEASE ... The Ken Lee “C” Green- the Green is suffering. We have had to reduce the use to stop damage. Daniel is doing his best to get around a series of water pump failures but when the sprinkler cycle cuts out around midnight or later it is not until the next morning that the lack of watering is noticed. The Board is in deep discussions with Kingston Council to get our irrigation issues resolved. Computer Update – some of you may have noticed that we had a very, very, very slow PC in the Office. The PC is needed for keeping Club records and emails and for exchanging and inputting information

New Tables – we are looking at 10 replacement tables for our old ones in the Club Room. Barbara Overson is busy sourcing the right tables at the right price. Dogs and Pets: The Board is going to write a clause into the Club Regulations restricting the presence of pets on the premises. Sorry animal lovers but we can only allow Disability/Assistance animals and 3-legged dogs. Raffle License: We have been officially declared as a place to hold minor gaming. As long as our raffles have a prize less than $500 we do not need to apply for a Raffle Permit. But this still means we can’t have cash prizes for raffles so the Gift Cards will continue for now. Future Greens Sub-Committee (FGSC): The Board has formed a Sub-Committee to assist the Club in some immediate and future planning in respect to our playing surfaces. Volunteer members who responded with expressions of interest after our recent advertising are Bob Steele, Greg Kelly, Jeanette Barrett, John Bryant, Robert Rook and Shirley Simpson. Thank-you for joining this important project. The Sub-Committee has been given detailed Terms of Reference. In summary they are to get a professional assessment on the status of our synthetic Green, research and recommend a replacement synthetic green surface and provide a future vision as to where and what our Greens will look like in 5 to 10 years. Importantly, in order to firstly apply for Grants we need costed quotes and project scope of works. The Board is seeking various sources of assistance. Bar Roster: We are trying to get a shared Bar Roster going for the coming year. We have some 10 volunteer helpers – some with Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificates and some who “intend” to get them. If you feel that you can help out for 15 or 30 mins on some of our busier days (Fridays and Saturdays) then talk to Ray Lambert or Ian Thomas and they will add you to the Roster – should mean helping out once a month.

New Members Members please welcome . and introduce yourself to our new members named above

From the President, Saturday Section (Ian Wilding)

The Saturday Section Committee has had its’ last meeting for 2014. At this stage, about halfway through the 2014-2015 season, aspects of the club’s activities under the ambit of the committee - Saturday pennant, club championships, social days run by the Match Committee and preparations for our tournaments - are proceeding satisfactorily. The Christmas period is a good time to focus on one of the above mentioned aspects - our tournaments. Early in December we have contacted, by mail or email, our neighboring clubs, and individuals who have played in our tournaments the past two years, providing information about and inviting entries to our forthcoming tournaments. We have the • Baguley Men’s Fours (21st March) • The Men’s Classic Three-Bowl pairs (11th April) and • The Mixed Medley (18th April) We are also working co-operatively with the Mid-Week Section to promote the Armed Bowlers tournament (15th March) and the Isabel Baguley Ladies’ Fours (31st March). Flyers with entry forms attached are now available and I encourage all members to give our club a Christmas present by planning to enter our tournaments and by personally inviting bowlers from other clubs to enter teams.

In the lead up to Christmas many households put up Christmas lights. Do you know how difficult and dangerous it is to put up 1500 Christmas lights on the roof of a house? At one house in my street the kids were offering 2 to 1 Dad was going to come down the chimney before Santa Claus did. And there are many parties. Last year a first occurred. A Christmas party was held in a completely automated office. The computer got drunk and tried to unfasten the electric typewriter’s ribbon.

Be happy, stay safe and peace be with you this Christmas. With every good wish for the New Year.

WELFARE From RAE (Ladies Welfare Officer.) Paula Baird is recovering well after her operation and hopes to be back on the green in about 6-8 weeks.

From Stan Holland ( Men’s Welfare Officer.) MEN’S WELFARE: 2014 Has been a tough year for some of the men this year with various medical problems that interrupted their bowling however most are over their problems and will go into the New Year with a new lease of life and ready to take on all on the green. Bernie, Bernie, Bernie come back it’s been “Too Quiet”. Backs can be a problem but “toughen man” and get back on the green we all miss you.
