AND MRS. ERNEST BRAWLEY 12 OF THE LOWER RICHLAND COMMUNITY ON THE 13 OCCASION OF THEIR SEVENTIETH WEDDING 14 ANNIVERSARY AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR 15 MANY BLESSINGS AND FULFILLMENT IN THE DAYS TO 16 COME. 17 18 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly 19 are pleased to learn that Ernest and Adelle A. Brawley of the 20 Lower Richland community will celebrate their seventieth 21 wedding anniversary on June 5, 2014; and 22 23 Whereas, in June 1944, when roses and daylilies were lifting their 24 happy, colorful blooms aloft, Ernest and Adelle pledged to one 25 another a lifetime of love and sharing as they were joined in holy 26 wedlock in Richland County; and 27 28 Whereas, Ernest, now age ninetyone, was born on July 2, 1922, in 29 Richland County and retired from the VA Hospital. Born in the 30 same county, Adelle came into this world on June 19, 1925, and 31 the dedicated homemaker is presently eightyeight years of age. She 32 has received training and various certifications through the 33 Clemson Extension; and 34 35 Whereas, having been united in marriage, the couple found joy in 36 the six children God gave them, Lucinda, Ernest, Jr., Rosa, Joseph, 37 Stanley, and Paul, who have blessed their parents with twenty 38 grandchildren and twentyseven greatgrandchildren; and 39 40 Whereas, lovers of the land since they were children, the Brawleys 41 farmed their Lower Richland property for nearly seventy years, 42 growing okra, potatoes, butter beans, and peas and drawing

[5273] 2 1 neighbors from throughout the county. They were known for 2 sharing their harvest with the elderly and sick; and 3 4 Whereas, as people of faith, the Brawleys have attended St. Phillip 5 AME Church in Eastover for more than sixty years. There, Ernest 6 served on the steward board for more than forty years, and Adelle 7 served on the stewardess board, usher board, and in the choir; and 8 9 Whereas, in their early years, the Brawleys were active in the Civil 10 Rights Movement, ensuring that their daughter Lucinda was able 11 to attend the college of her choice, Clemson University. (Lucinda 12 became the first black woman to attend this institution.) They were 13 also active in voter registration drives and other election activities. 14 Ernest and Adelle have seen their children continue this legacy of 15 engagement in civic and community discourse; and 16 17 Whereas, in addition, the Brawleys are longtime members of the 18 NAACP, and Ernest is a member of the Masons, while Adelle is a 19 past member of the Mount Olive Order of the Eastern Star; and 20 21 Whereas, few successes on earth crown a life as does a marriage 22 that endures the test of time, growing stronger with each passing 23 year; and 24 25 Whereas, through the years, Ernest Brawley has learned the 26 veracity of Proverbs 18:22, “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good 27 thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord,” and he now considers one 28 of his greatest achievements as having had the good sense to marry 29 his beloved Adelle; and 30 31 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 32 Representatives appreciate the example of love and faithfulness 33 that Ernest and Adelle Brawley have set for seven decades in their 34 enduring marriage. Now, therefore, 35 36 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 37 concurring: 38 39 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 40 resolution, congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Brawley of the Lower 41 Richland community on the occasion of their seventieth wedding 42 anniversary and extend best wishes for many blessings and 43 fulfillment in the days to come.
