Class Expectations and Guidelines

Course Description

The Physical Education course is designed to develop the student’s physical fitness and acquisition of motor skills. The activities offered increase strength, flexibility, cardio- respiratory endurance, and the functioning of all body systems. In addition, this course teaches students how to live healthy lifestyles by engaging them in physical and leisure activities that will follow them after graduation. This course will focus on individual sports, including, but not limited to, badminton, aerobics, swimming, tennis, dance and golf.

Student Responsibilities (as stated in the opening day PE presentation)

1. Dress for Success 2. Be Here 3. Do your Best

Course Materials

Students are expected to have their ERHS Physical Education t-shirts and shorts, tennis shoes, and water bottles with them at all times.

Grading System

Since PE is a participation based class, the majority of the student’s grade will be based on dressing for class, effort, participation and conduct. However, there will also be tests given throughout the semester.

Grading and Evaluation

Participation/attendance 40% Warm up 10% Dress 10% Written tests/quizzes/ homework 15% Physical exams 25%

Written tests/quizzes/homework: tests will be given at the end of every unit and will be based on handouts given in class or any notes taken on sports related topics. Quizzes may be given at any time either announced or unannounced. A written final exam will be taken at the end of the semester including all material learned. Participation/Attendance: Students will receive 10 points per day for participation. Points will be deducted for standing around and not doing the activity or talking instead of playing a sport. If a student is absent, no points will be given for that day, however, the points made be made up (please see make up policy above.)

Warm Up: The Physical Education Department at ERHS has a set warm up that is done before each class proceeds to their individual activities. This warm up includes stretching and strengthening exercises to prepare the student for the upcoming activities. A student who does not complete ALL warm up exercises will lose points and their grade will be affected.

Dress: Students will be given 5 points a day for properly dressing out for PE (see ERHS Uniform/Dress policy).

Make-up Policy

Because Physical Education is a participation based class, if a student is absent, they will receive a zero for that day. Students may make up those points within 2 class periods upon returning to school. Written make up prompts can be found on my teacher page on the school website. A physical test (i.e 5K or timed mile run) cannot be made up with a written assignment. Points must be made up with a similar activity. Please see Mrs. Cornwell for make-up work if you have missed a physical test.

Medical Excuses

Students are excused from participation with a parent or Doctor note only and must include a phone number where you can be reached during the day. Parent notes are accepted for three consecutive days. After three days, a Doctor’s note is required. Students are still expected to dress out during their medical excuses, and will be given a written assignment to earn the participation points for the day.

I have read and understand the contents of the Intro to PE syllabus and agree to abide by all rules and regulations.
