JOB SPECIFICATION
1. PREAMBLE The Southern Adelaide Health Service (Southern Health) was established on 1 July 2004 and brings together Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Health Services and Drug and Alcohol Services of SA. The Service also maintains a close affiliation with the Repatriation General Hospital and other health services in the southern area. With 330,000 people in the region, a budget of more than $400M and about 4,000 staff, Southern Health is working towards coordination of services across the region and working cooperatively to improve the health of the community and to reduce the demand on acute hospital services.
2. SUMMARY OF THE BROAD PURPOSE OF THE POSITION and its responsibilities/duties
This position is classified at WHA3 level of SA Government Health Ancillary etc. Employees Award by virtue of the following requirements.
Flinders Medical Centre is an acute/emergency public hospital co-located with a campus of the Flinders University of South Australia which provides teaching and research activities. The Sterilizing Services is a unit of the Perioperative and Emergency Services
The Ancillary Health Worker carries out a range of sterilizing operations which result in the timely and efficient supply of equipment, instruments, linen, medical/surgical consumables and anaesthetic equipment to the medical centre. A range of sterilization equipment and techniques is used including
Decontamination of equipment by manual/mechanical techniques Chemical High pressure Steam Dry Heat Heat sealing

The incumbent is responsible for carrying out the range of Sterilizing Services operations which contribute to the effective and efficient sterilizing of equipment, instruments, Theatre linen and medical/surgical consumables to the medical centre in a timely manner.

Job and Person Specifications are reviewed regularly as part of the ongoing Performance Development process. May be required to work within other locations of the Southern Adelaide Health Service. Out of hours work will be required. ( On-Call ) Overtime may be required from time to time Flexibility of working hours The incumbent will be required to work over a 24 hour roster or "on call" system. The roster pattern will generally be day/.afternoon shift over seven days of the week. Required to participate in Continuos Quality Improvement Programs Support values consistent with the aims of the Region, including honesty, respect and integrity. Will be required to undertake a health assessment prior to commencement. Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Offender History Check. Comply with the Principles of the Code of Fair Information Practice, adopted by the Department of Health, which regulate the collection, use, disclosure, storage and transfer of all personal patient/client information within the Department and throughout its funded service providers. Must have independent means of transport for out of hours work

In line with AS 4187 Cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing reusable medical and surgical instruments and equipment, and maintenance of associated environments in health care facilities.
Responsibilities:
Contribute to the effective and efficient supply of sterilized equipment, instruments, linen, anaesthetic and medical/surgical consumables by
Sorting, decontaminating, inspecting and packing equipment prior to sterilization. Sterilize equipment by use of appropriate sterilization method
Contribute to the impresting and supply of equipment and consumables by
Inspecting sterilized equipment by way of chemical indicators post sterilization Filling imprest orders ready for distribution Completing statistical information on sterilized equipment Totalling sterile stock issues
Contribute to Quality Improvement and Control Processes by
Reporting any faults, malfunctions or loss of equipment Keeping Quality Improvement records in a legible manner using proformas in place Carrying out required checks of equipment

Educational/Vocational Qualifications
Studying or willing to study for the Certificate III in Sterilization Technology
Personal Abilities/Aptitudes/Skills

Whilst direct sterilizing experience is not essential, the candidate needs to demonstrate skills that are transferable to hospital quality management systems

Proven experience in basic computing skills, including email and word processing Personal practical experience in the operation of tunnel/batch type equipment washing machines, ultrasonic cleaners, steam, chemical and dry heat sterilizers, rotary heat sealers and other mechanical aids, generally in use in Sterilizing. Personal practical experience in the inspection and packing of both ward and operating theatre medical/surgical equipment Personal practical experience in storage and handling of sterile stock and equipment.
Knowledge
Practical knowledge of all aspects of basic sterilizing technology. A general working knowledge of AS 4187
