Activate/Build Prior Knowledge: Have you ever wondered how the pioneers of the westward expansion did some of their everyday activities? What kinds of problems do you think they had? What I wonders do you have about their everyday lives? Here are some I wonders: How do you make butter while the wagon train is moving? How do you keep eggs from breaking as you ride? Hoe so you dry meat to make it last a long time. How do you make a fire with out wood? How do you help oxen when they have tired feet? Look at the book. Browse some of the pages. What do you notice about how the book is set up? Did you notice that the book is in question and answer format. Even the table of contents is in question form. Today as you read when you finish an answer to the question, you will stop and write some key words that remind you of the answer. These key words will then be used for you to write on the topic: If you traveled in a covered wagon. . . .

Comprehension Strategy: Summarization and Question/Answer text structure

Use stop and write along with key word strategy to compose answers to the T chart. During Reading During reading do a T chart marking the questions and answers. See attachment. The book is set up in question and answer format. Using appropriate Guided reading strategies, students will be reading at their own pace and teachers will be listening to students read, monitoring, giving feedback, taking anecdotal notes and running records. Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: After Reading Complete anything missed on the T chart. Attend to key words. Highlight key words on your T chart.
