Class Requirements:

Freshmen: Basic Swimming Program- Each individual will be placed into one of three groups based upon swim ability. All students will be pre-tested to determine their ability.

Group 1: Students who have not been taught how to swim and are not comfortable in water. Group 2: Students who are comfortable in water and need to refine their skills. Group 3: Students who are not afraid to swim in deep water and will refine swim strokes.

Leaders: We use student leaders extensively to provide individual and small group instruction. Most are lifeguard certified or Swim Aids that have gone through the American Red Cross Program. You are reminded that they are acting on our behalf and are to follow their directions. If you are having difficulties with a leader please see your instructor.

Parent Notes: Notes from home to excuse you from participation can be used for a maximum of 10 days (for the girls) and 2 notes for the boys for a 9 week period. Notes should include:

1. The reason you are not participating (illness or personal).

2. The length of time you will be out of activity.

3. A phone number where your parent or guardian can be reached during the daytime.

4. Notes from home to excuse you from participation can be used for a total of 10 days for menses (5 days for each menses during the quarter). If a note is forgotten, the student will have 24 hours (or the next time the class meets) to produce the note. If there is a problem, the parent/guardian should contact the swim instructor at 708.271.4464 or [email protected]

Students who are not participating in swim due to menses (total of 10 days 5 days for each menses, for 1 quarter of swim) will dress in their PE uniform, sit on stage, and receive their daily participation points by doing written work from the PE packet. Those who are not participating in swim due to illness and have the required medial note will dress in their PE uniform, sit on stage, and receive their daily participation points by doing written work from the PE packet. ***Any student not dressed in a PE uniform will immediately be sent to their dean for appropriate consequences and a phone call will be made home*****THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE!!!

Visits: Visits to counselors, deans, and interviews to other teachers are not allowed during your Physical Education class. You are expected to be in attendance daily. If you need to see your counselor or dean, fill out a request to be called and he/she will send for you when convenient.

Showers: All students who are swimming are to take a complete shower, head to foot. Students who need to return to showers will be given a tardy.

Tardies: Students who are tardy to class will report to E108 for consequence. Upon return student will report to the security guard as the locker room area locked when bell rings. The security guard outside the pool door will admit you into the pool area. Bring your swim items to class you will be required to swim if time permits. Students should be on deck for attendance 6-7 minutes after the tardy bell. Dismissal will be by the instructor with 12 minutes allowed for dressing.

Suits: All swimmers may bring their own suits and towel from home. Bathing suits are available through Thornridge (Limited quantity). Suits will be provided daily if necessary. Sizes range from 30 to 54 for girls and boys. Rental will cost $.50 a day with exchange of an ID. When done with rental items they need to be placed in the appropriate bin and then student will receive ID back from rental room. The suits and towels are sterilized and sanitized by Thornridge laundry each day. NO TWO PIECE SUITS ARE ALLOWED. If you provide your own suit and towel, you need to bring a plastic bag (NO BOOKBAGS ALLOWED) for transporting your belongings to and from your hall locker. Your swim items must be brought to class daily. The pool lockers are to be used and locked (with a PE lock) during your class time only.

Caps: Students may provide their own caps if they desire, however, bathing caps can be purchased from your instructor for $3.00 (limited quantity). They should be labeled with your name and period of swim.

Goggles: Students are encouraged to wear goggles when swimming and should label them with their name and period of swim. Goggles can be purchased from your instructor for $5.00 (limited quantity)

Towel: Each student will be provided with ONE clean towel (if available). Extra towels are available for a charge of $.25. All used rental items will need to be placed in the laundry bin when finished using. Towels left on the floors will result in an after school detention.

Lock: You have been issued a regulation Thornridge lock to secure your possessions. Teachers will NOT open locks for you. You are required to use your lock and not to rely upon the instructor to guard your valuables. Do not bring large amount of cash or valuable jewelry to class. All jewelry must be removed before coming on deck.

Safety: The following rules have been established for the safety of all. Please adhere to them. Failure to follow established class procedures or safety rules will result in disciplinary action and/or failure of swim class. 1. No eating or drinking in locker, pool, or on deck.

2. No running it is especially slippery at the entrances to the locker rooms.

3. No diving of the side into shallow ends of marking areas.

4. Flips and back dives are not allowed on the side of the pool.

5. No swimming in the diving area when the boards are in use.

6. No dunking- you will receive a failing grade for the quarter and be referred to your dean to be removed from the class because you a safety hazard in the pool area.

7. No pushing- (Same consequence as stated above)

8. No horseplay allowed- (Same consequence as stated above)

9. No double bouncing on boards.

10. No throwing of objects at the other swimmers or divers

11. Athletic Equipment such as: footballs, basketballs, volleyball, water polo ball, etc…are only allowed in the small pool.

12. NO GUM!!!!!!!! Automatic after school detention.

13. DO NOT GET DRESSED IN STALLS. Others are waiting to use the washroom.

Injury: Students who suffer an injury are to report the injury to the instructor immediately. Equipment: Equipment being used during class is to be put away before leaving the deck area. YOU BROUGHT IT OUT YOU PUT IT BACK!!!! Medicals: After the 2nd week of swim medicals are not accepted to remove students from class. The grade earned at the present time will determine the student’s grade for the nine weeks in swimming. Students with medicals will report to a specific area when on a long term medical. This is determined by the AIL. They will either have to finish PE curriculum in the PLATO lab, do written work established by the AIL instructor, or will join in the upper classmen rotation.

Grading: Grades for freshman and leaders will determined by a point system. A student will earn points each day for participation and be tested on 28 skills. Also, weekly fitness swims and written work will be a requirement for all students. *Life guarding (swim aids) grades will be based on the skill teaching technique, participation in the water, accurate records and final exam.

*ALL students will dress (bathing suit, PE uniform, or PE rental) everyday!! NO exceptions!! YOU will not be allowed on the deck with street clothes on!!!***

MAKE UPS CAN BE DONE DUIRING CP WITH THE APPROVAL OF YOUR INSTRUCTOR.

*ALL ELECTRONICS WILL BE CONFISCATED AND GIVEN TO YOUR DEANS**
