International Ringing Camp of Seine Estuary (France)

Every year since 1983, a ringing camp gathers “A” permit holders and trainees within the large reed bed of the north bank of the Seine Estuary (National Nature Reserve of the Seine Estuary) in Haute-Normandie (France). The ringing camp takes place every year during August and aims to study reed bed passerines during the autumn migration e.g. Acrocephalus sp, Bearded tit (Panurus biarmicus) and Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica)...

The National Nature Reserve of the Seine Estuary is an important site for several thousands of migratory birds originating from Northern and Eastern Europe. The mist nets are erected within the reed bed (one of the largest in France with 1,300 hectares) and in more open habitats such as pools and channels. Tilting and special cages are also used.

In addition to the ringing activity, this ringing camp is a great opportunity to discover the National Nature Reserve and its wildlife.

The Year 2008 will focus on the study of Aquatic warbler, Acrocephalus paludicola, a species of very high conservation value which is threatened worldwide. The Seine Estuary is one of the main stopover sites for Aquatic warbler in the world with the birds passing through the estuary during autumn.

The ringing camp is organised by la Maison de L`estuaire, association which manages the National Nature Reserve and the coordinateur de l’observatoire avifaune de la ZPS Estuaire et Marais de la Basse Seine in partenariat with the Groupe Ornithologique Normand (centre Régional de Baguage de Normandie) and under the aegis of the Centre de Recherche sur la Biologie des Populations d’Oiseaux (Muséum National d’Histoire Naturel de Paris).

The accommodation, a self-catering holiday cottage with 5 beds, is located in proximity of the ringing camp near the Normandy Bridge (and in front of cottage, a field for tents).

Cost of the ringing camp: Free for A permit. Others 50 euros / per person per week (+ 10 € subscription to the Groupe Ornithologique Normand for insurance). Everything included expect food and transport.

Things to bring & informations: field equipments (wellies, chest waders, warm and waterproof clothing, field note book), ringing equipments (for “A” permit holder and eventually for trainees) and sleeping bag, sleeping mattress, tents (if more than 5 people are booked in the self-catering cottage).

You'll catering for yourselves so you need to bring food, drink. There are some supermarket very near the apartment but only french food : come with your traditional food and drink ! You have inside apartment everything to cook and to wash...

We will catch mostly warblers : Acrocephalus schoenobaenus, Acrocephalus scirpaceus (80% of birds in reedbeds and sometimes more than 150 birds each morning per station). We will catch a few tens of Marsh warbler, Savi’s warbler and Aquatic warbler during august. More than 80 species have been ringed since 1983 ! During camp you will be up at first light and you will ring in different locality of reeds during morning until 12-13 pm (break during the middle of the day) and we can re-start in the end of afternoon (roost Riparia riparia, Motacilla flava etc...). Each ringer work with around 150 meters of nets. Probably, we’ll make specific French A permit for official ringer out of France. If not, English ringer will ring with French ringer…and we will confirm you as soon as possible (before the end of june) if you need to bring pole and mistnets !

Comme chaque année depuis 1983, un camp de baguage rassemble bagueurs d’oiseaux et stagiaires au cœur de la grande roselière de la rive nord de l’estuaire de la Seine (Réserve Naturelle Nationale de l’estuaire de la Seine) en Haute-Normandie. Le camp de baguage se déroule durant le mois d’août chaque année et sa principale vocation est l’étude des fauvettes paludicoles en migration post-nuptiale : rousserolles, phragmites, gorgebleues, panures, bruants...

L’année 2008 sera marquée par l’étude d’une espèce hautement patrimoniale, le rare Phragmite aquatique, Acrocephalus paludicola, espèce migratrice mondialement menacée qui transite par l’estuaire de la Seine, un des principaux site de halte migratoire au monde !

La Réserve Naturelle Nationale de l’estuaire de la Seine est un site majeur pour des dizaines de milliers d’oiseaux migrateurs venant d’Europe du Nord et de l’Est. Les filets de capture sont disposés sur différentes stations au sein de la vaste roselière de 1300 ha et ponctuellement sur des zones plus ouvertes telles que les mares, les chemins ou les creux d’alimentation. D’autres systèmes de capture seront utilisés au cours de ce stage : matole, clap-net...

En outre, ce stage est aussi l’occasion de connaître le fonctionnement d’une Réserve Naturelle Nationale et de faire de nombreuses observations naturalistes !

Ce stage est organisé par la Maison de l’Estuaire, organisme gestionnaire de la Réserve Naturelle Nationale et coordinateur de l’observatoire avifaune de la ZPS Estuaire et Marais de la Basse Seine en partenariat avec le Groupe Ornithologique Normand (Centre Régional de Baguage de Normandie) et sous l’égide du Centre de Recherche sur la Biologie des Populations d’Oiseaux (Muséum National d’Histoire Naturel de Paris).

Hébergement dans un gîte rural situé à moins de 10 km des stations de capture (5 couchages) et champ à disposition pour l’installation des tentes.

Prix du stage : 50 euros / stagiaire (gratuit pour les bagueurs) / semaine (+10€ adhésion au GONm pour l’assurance) tous frais compris sans la nourriture.

Déroulement du stage : consulter le lien : http://www2.mnhn.fr/crbpo/ Prévoir : matériel de terrain (bottes, cuissardes ou waders, vêtements chauds et étanches), matériel de baguage (pour les bagueurs agrées et éventuellement pour les stagiaires), matériel pour la saisie informatique (facultatif) et la prise de notes, nécessaire de couchage (drap ou duvet) et tente en cas de manque de place dans le gîte.
