Report on Previous Year

2007-2008 was another good year for the chapter. The chapter provided financial contributions to Student conferences at Tennessee Tech and Clemson University. One chapter member participated on the Industrial Advisory Committee for the successful ABET accreditation process at Virginia State University. The chapter also staffed a booth at Career Day promoting Industrial Engineering as a career path. Attendance was very good for most of our meetings. We teamed with SME to tour the ALSTOM Power turbine rework facility and we invited members of ASME to join us on a tour of the Service Center Metals aluminum extrusion facility. We also had good attendance and participation at our dinner meeting in January 2008 for a round table discussion of Process Improvement, Lean, Six Sigma and all things IE. The February Engineers' Week banquet was also well attended by our chapter.

Our talented pool of officers has changed again this year. Herb Walke continued as President, Milt Burton as Vice President, Tom Askew continued as the chapter’s Treasurer and Errol Restelli continued as the Membership Chair. Rahul Agarwal, our award winning Newsletter Editor, accepted a position in India. Mark Oakes has rejoined the board as Newsletter Editor. Brad Reynolds continued as the chapter’s RJEC delegate, and George Gardner, a previous chapter president, has rejoined the board as President-elect. Our chapter continues to support the Richmond Joint Engineers' Council, an all-volunteer coalition of more than 25 engineering, scientific and technical societies in the Richmond / Petersburg Metropolitan Areas of Virginia. The RJEC promotes Engineering Education, and provides a vehicle to disseminate knowledge and information relating the art and science of engineering to its member societies and the general public. Three (3) current members of the Richmond chapter of IIE are on the RJEC board of directors. Mark Oakes and Herb Walke, our past and current president, are the current and past chairs, respectively, of RJEC and Brad Reynolds is the Communications Director of RJEC. The chapter began a community outreach program last year. Two of our members assisted Community Based Services (a non-profit adult care organization) in reviewing their layout plans for office relocation to a new 5,000 square foot facility in Chesterfield County,VA. Also, members met with associates of the Central Virginia Food Bank on three separate occasions to determine how our Richmond IIE Chapter can assist them in their activities that collect and distribute almost 10 million pounds of food annually in the Central Virginia area. We also used our December holiday party, with ASME, to collect cash contributions for the CVFB. One member was a volunteer for the FIRST Robotics NASA/VCU competition in Richmond in March 2008 where more than 400 students participated.

Membership has remained strong with just under 70 members. We met our financial goals for this past year and are beginning the current year with approximately $1800 in the checking account. The upcoming year will be exciting due to the strength of our meetings, leadership team and the commitment with other engineering societies to hold joint meetings where appropriate. Our main focus for 2008-2009 will be to improve the quality of our programs in order to increase member participation and work to get additional chapter members from the VA Tech and UVA alumni residing in the Central Virginia area.
