The Commissioner fulfils an ombudsman-like role, reviewing certain actions affecting Parliamentary Service employees in their employment, such as promotion decisions, and inquires into Parliamentary Service actions, including certain breaches of the Parliamentary Service Code of Conduct.
By convention, the role is performed by the person appointed as the Merit Protection Commissioner under the Public Service Act 1999.
