SIR JOHN CASS’S FOUNDATION
Established in 1748, and now a major educational charity benefiting London, the Foundation provides funding to schools and organisations, as well as individuals, via its scholarships and bursaries programmes.
The Foundation takes its name from its founder, Sir John Cass. Born in 1661, he served as Alderman, Sheriff and MP for the City of London and was knighted in 1712. Today the Foundation has links in the nursery, primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of education.
In 2010, the Foundation agreed to boost its support to needy individuals and announced a five year £1.5m Scholarships Programme. This new initiative with the Office of the Lord Mayor of the City of London commenced in the 2011/12 academic year.
This year, the Foundation will be awarding 20 scholarships. Scholars will be eligible to apply if they are in attendance at one of seven universities, which are: University of East London; Queen Mary, University of London; London Metropolitan University; Imperial College, London; University of the Arts; Goldsmiths College, University of London and City University.
Applications should be made directly to the universities, and it is envisaged that those students supported in year one, will also receive support in subsequent years, subject to a satisfactory report from their university confirming academic progress and good attendance.
This year’s Scholarships Programme will be launched at the Mansion House in the presence of the Rt Hon Lord Mayor, Alderman Fiona Woolf CBE on the 5th November 2014 between 10am and 11am and successful applicants will be expected to attend.
