Class Text: NCCER. All materials will be administered during class
Course Description and Topics of Study: This course is intended to be an introductory study of Carpentry/Construction with wood. Students will learn using hands on projects and assignments in class and around campus. The concepts covered in this course will be:
Read and interpret basic house plan Develop a "Bill of Materials" for each project Read a ruler and measure accurately Know basic nomenclature (wood/tools) Know how to glue and assemble projects Use hand and power tools safely Required Class Materials:
A spiral notebook dedicated to the class
Graph paper in the notebook for notes and daily activities
Writing utensils (pencil is preferred)
Class Expectations:
Be on time (excessive tardies will result in disciplinary action)
Bring all required materials to class (I will not provide writing utensils)
Respect each other in all situations.
NO FOOD OR DRINK AT ANY TIME, medical situations are the only exception
Refrain from use of cell phones, tablets and MP3 players,(see electronics policy)
$35 class fee paid to the ASB office, helps pay for nails, screws, blades, glues etc.
Evaluation/Grading:
A 4 point system is used for all assessed work. All assignments are grouped into one of the following categories:
Assessments/Labs/Projects/Employability Skills-include: Tests, major projects, reports and large class assignments, participation (80% of total grade)
Class work/homework/quizzes other assignments (20% of grade)
Grading Policies: : Because students will be working with a partners nearly always, it is recommended that students be present. When a student is absent, the speed at which the team can work is seriously hindered. It is the student’s responsibility to inquire about missed work from their partners. Extra copies of all assignments are available in the classroom. Appropriate times to inquire about missed work are before/after school and during Core/Flex.
Late work: All late work is due on the day of the unit test. All assignments missing past the unit test will be marked as “0”. Most of the work in this class is “performance” based, so if a student is absent the day that the group’s work is assessed, he or she will be required to submit written materials to account for contribution to the project.
Retaking a Test: A student may retake each unit test ONE time, under the following conditions:
The retake is taken before the next unit test
The retake is taken before school, after school or during Core/Flex.
The retake score is the final score recorded
Electronics Policy: I am a teacher who enjoys integrating technology into the classroom, but there is a time and a place for everything.
Before entering the classroom, all cell/smart phones, MP3 players and tablet devices should be turned off/silenced (no vibrate mode, students will be too tempted) and put out of sight (Not on your desk). All devices that are in plain sight or used during inappropriate times shall be confiscated, turned into the office.
Disclaimer: My hope is that this class will be different from any other class your student has ever taken. Students will be working in
partner groups 99% of the time and often, the partner group will be assessed as a single entity. The equipment that your student will be working with is rather costly and students are expected to be responsible for the care and inventory of the materials, their individual tools and equipment. Tool inventory and equipment checks will be administered at Mr. Price’s discretion. If equipment is found to be damaged or lost, the team will be found financially responsible for replacing or repairing any of the equipment/parts. Students will sign a contract agreeing to care for such items. If students are found to be careless with the equipment, they will be asked to leave the class and be withdrawn from the course immediately.
With that said, I am so excited to be a teacher!! I truly believe that if students enter this classroom with a willingness the challenge
themselves, think through problems and work cooperatively with others…they will learn so much and thoroughly enjoy themselves in the process. The field of Carpentry/Construction is a highly sought after field in the evolving workforce. Student’s participation in the class will do nothing but prepare them for success and make them more eligible for opportunities in the future!

Shop class is a bit different from the other classes offered at THS. Participation in a shop class requires the student not only to receive classroom and demonstration instruction, but also to operate machines and be around equipment as a part of the instructional program. Even though safety procedures are taught and stressed, examinations covering safety are given to students, and protective equipment is furnished, there is the possibility of personal injury.
Accidents stem from a variety of causes including lack of attention, using incorrect procedures, and hurrying. Resulting injuries can range from a bruise to the loss of a finger or eye. Student injuries are infrequent, but do happen where there is machinery involved. The school wishes to make parents, guardians, and students aware of this fact. At the same time, parent/guardian cooperation is urged in stressing the importance of following directions, observing safety rules and seeking teacher guidance when unsure of a process or machine operation.
Please verify your receipt and agreement of this letter by signing below and returning this signed letter to the shop instructor. This is meant to help form a strong impression concerning the importance of shop safety. By signing below, you authorize your student to use power machinery, if and when the shop instructor deems your student is prepared to use such equipment. At no time will the student be forced to use power tools. However, no student will be permitted to use power tools unless this form is properly signed and filed in the shop. Should you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to contact me. Email generally works best.
Sincerely,
Steve Eliason
