Dear Cyberclass,

Welcome to WWW101 Overview of the Internet spring 2006 online section. Class begins February 13 and ends April 28. Enclosed with this letter are login and password instructions for the course. This is an exciting time for computer literacy as more and more businesses; educational organizations and other services use the Internet. This course, taught completely over the Internet, will highlight the main topics of Internet use and the World Wide Web. Nine online assignments for this ten-week course deal with issues such as listservs, discussions, private chat, and social issues.

A Demonstration/Orientation Workshop will be held on Wednesday, February 15, from 6:00 -7:00 p.m. at the Des Plaines campus, Learning Center, room 2400. Park in Lot "A", gymnasium and theater entrance. The Learning Center lab is located on the second floor above the cafeteria. This session is especially helpful if you have not taken other online courses at Oakton, and would like to meet with the instructor.

This will be the only on-campus meeting for the term. The workshop will introduce you to Oakton's online education system and the college's resources. You will have "hands on” access to the course and complete the first assignment. Your instructor will also be available to answer your questions. At our meeting, you will also have the chance to meet your online classmates. You may use your home, work, or school Internet address to access the course.

The bookstore will be open on this day, and you may purchase the textbook: Internet Literacy, third edition, by Fred T. Hofstetter, Irwin/McGraw Hill, 2003 ISBN#0-07-0251957- 6, or through Oakton's online bookstore at: http://www.oakton.edu/resource/campserv/bookstor.htm or through other bookstores. The book also has a companion website that supplements the text.

General Information : Although the course is taught through the Internet, know that there is a live teacher on the other end of the computer. I will be happy to guide you as you explore this course. In addition, you will have many opportunities to learn about your classmates. Remember to keep your sense of humor, balance and plan for misbehaving computers, servers, etc. As I say, there are good computer days and bad computer days!

Begin thinking about how you will schedule your time to complete the course requirements. Expect to spend approximately two hours per week in course related time. It’s best to set a study schedule, just as you would for a face to face course. Weekly assignments will be completed and forwarded to the instructor through the course communication system. The course assumes some familiarity with word processing, and the ability to send and receive e- mail messages, some with attachments.

Preparation In preparation for this class, you should complete one of the surveys on online education readiness to determine if online courses are really right for you. Look at: What Makes a Successful Online Student? http://www.ion.uillinois.edu/resources/tutorials/pedagogy/StudentProfile.asp. This "address" can be typed into the "location" or "search" box. Complete one of the self-evaluation surveys on online education readiness. OFF CAMPUS : 1. Connect to AOL or other Internet Service Providers (ISP). For AOL users, minimize the AOL screen (upper right hand corner of the screen dash line) and then open Internet Explorer or other browser. Note that AOL and the college’s Netscape will not work with WEBCT.

2. In the "search" box type the college's online courses address URL: http://online.oakton.edu: 8900 3. You will see “Log in to WEBCT” The instructor has already entered your WEBCT id and password. 4. The WEBCT login box will appear. Login I.D. is: < first seven letters of last name> (Begins with a B and can be found on your bill.) Password: December 17, 2002 would be: 121702

Example: Student, George Washington, and OAKSTAR ID B1234567 Sample login: gwashing4567 Sample password: 121702

5. Next will appear the MY WEBCT page with your name and this course listed: WWW101 spring 2006-click on this, and you will be at the course's homepage. Add this site to your bookmarks or favorites for easy access to the course.

ON CAMPUS 1. Access the Oakton login (control + alt + delete) 2. Select the "user group" by the last number of your OCC ID- students 3. Use the same login and pass word as listed above 4. Minimize Netscape and open Internet Explorer 5. Then proceed from #2 above

Taddah! You're at the home page of our course. Additional instructions are available at the WEBCT Student Guide icon. For your first visit, spend some time clicking on each of the icons displayed. You may also watch the video "welcome" that has been prepared by the instructor.

The Syllabus, Topic Pages, and Lessons/Content will be your main source for assignments and topic information. Each Lesson page has the assignment, will also have due dates, point values, reading assignment, activity, and related links. The Calendar can be viewed to see the due dates. You can also use it to keep your private activities. For communication, WEBCT Discussion will allow us to send messages and contact members of the class as a group. Private mail is for one to one messages within the course. Students can create your own web pages. These are not required assignments, but feel free to experiment with this feature. Please note that I am somewhat flexible in these due dates. They are posted mostly to keep you on track.
