Course: Advanced Algebra II Teacher: Lisa Huddleston Text: Algebra and Trigonometry: Functions and Applications, by Paul Foerster

Welcome to Advanced Algebra II where we will be exploring a variety of algebraic topics with an emphasis on functions and their applications. We will begin the course with a quick review of algebraic expressions and equations before developing our study of functions. This document is designed to give you some basic information about expectations as we begin our year together.

Class Time We will spend 45 minutes each day investigating problems, working examples, and taking notes. As you come into class, get your notebook, pen, pencil, and homework out, and prepare to begin class so that we don’t waste any time.

Organization You will need both a bound notebook (spiral or composition book, preferably with graph paper) and a section of a 3-ring binder. Please bring these to class each day, but leave your textbook at home. Your homework and class notes will be completed in your bound notebook each day. Use the 3-ring binder only for handouts. Bring both a pencil (for completing your work) and a pen (for checking your work) with you each day.

Homework You will have homework to complete almost every day, and we will usually check it together in class the next day. With the exception of word problems, please copy the problems into your notebook as you work them there. Homework is not an optional activity. If you come to class without complete homework, you will need to come in at lunch or stay after school to complete it. Please plan accordingly. Completing homework takes priority over club meetings and sports activities. If you come to school without completing your homework, be sure to arrange for a ride home around 3:15.

Make-Up Work When you are absent from class for whatever reason, the responsibility for getting caught up is yours. You will need to spend time outside of class copying notes from a classmate, attending extra help sessions, or completing missed work. Please come by before school, at lunch, or after school to talk about your missed work. Call a friend or look at your assignment sheet to find out what homework is due when you return so that you are not any further behind than is absolutely necessary. When you are absent for school-related activities, you should always come to class with your homework done.

Grades Homework 15%, quizzes and daily work 25%, tests & projects 60%. Participation Learning mathematics requires active participation. Come to class with questions from your homework. Ask about topics or problems that are not clear in class. Help your classmates with mistakes that they have made. Participation is a key component for success in math classes. Use the “Rule of Three” in large group discussions each day – participate three times by asking questions, answering questions, or offering suggestions or insights. This guideline will give both you and your classmates a chance to participate actively.

Honor Code On many assignments that you will have, you are encouraged to work together and help each other. Please realize that working together involves discussing problems and comparing answers. It does not include copying work in any form. For example, having one student do the even problems on the homework and another do the odd and then copying each other’s work is cheating. If you wonder if an action is in violation of the Honor Code, please ask.

Math Help I am available for help outside of class. I will try to be in my classroom at the following times, but check with me whenever possible to make sure that something has not come up. I have duty and meetings that I must attend in addition to personal appointments. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 8:10-8:55 in my classroom and lunchtime daily on the front steps.

Contact Me Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you have. You can e-mail me at [email protected] or call me at 715-1155. I will try to keep my website current at www.raleighcharterhs.org/faculty/lhuddleston for you to be able to get course information.

As the year progresses, please let me know how I can help you in your studies. At RCHS, we strive to create an atmosphere that is both supportive and challenging. If you have concerns, I will be happy to address them with you. This promises to be an exciting year, and I look forward to sharing it with you.

Lisa Huddleston
