How Science Works Focus s1

Outline activity plan – P1.4 Energy, Temperature and the Transfer of Heat Energy (a - c)

How Science Works focus Application and implications of science Breadth of study context (i) Data, evidence, theories and explanations. (ii) Practical and enquiry skills. (iii) Communication skills. Objective(s) 1. Revise previous work on the three states of matter – focus on liquid and gas. 2. Study animations to understand the scientific processes that relate to convection. 3. Raise pupil awareness of the impact of convection on their everyday lives Planned sequence of Reinforcing previous work. activity  Revise previous work (year 7/8) on solids, liquids and gases – focus on liquid and gas.  The conduction animation 3 States of Matter 2 can again be used to reinforce previous work.

Introducing a new topic.  Short video clips Convection 1, Convection 2 and Convection 3 - to look at occurrences and examples of convection.

Pupil work.  Remind the pupils again about the three states of matter, especially liquid and gas.  Short video clips Convection 4 and 5 – to explain the process of covection in a gas and liquids.  View the video clip Convection 6 showing the experiment with Potassium Permanganate in water and explain what is happening. (If the school has the equipment then the experiment could take place or using a large beaker and a few crystals in the bottom).  Study the animation Convection Currents.  Complete Worksheet A and Worksheet B relating to these two examples.  Exemplar data on Worksheet C can be used to stimulate discussion, as a whiteboard activity or as an exercise in the computer room.  Complete the WJEC P1e task on the Assessment Sheet. A Mark Scheme for P1e is available.  Answer the questions on the Revision Sheet.

Knowledge and understanding.  Pupil knowledge will be assessed by the teacher and the pupils through the application of their knowledge to every day situations . The Revision Sheet is available. Resources  Video clips  Animation  Worksheets  Exemplar data  Practical equipment - Heat convection (see list on P1e sheet).  Assessment task  Revision questions Advice/instructions for  Other experiments may also be carried out to study convection, the teacher depending on the equipment available at the school.

Other notes 1. The drag and drop activity Conduction, Convection, Radiation and the Blockbusters Quiz (ActivStudio only) may be used as a plenary when all three aspects have been studied.
