Emergency Plans for Third Grade

The Bugliest Bug

Materials: o The Bugliest Bug by Carol Diggory Shields (found in the Everyone section – E Shi) o “My bugliest bug” page o Crayons (crayon buckets are on shelves in workroom) o Construction paper scraps (cut up about 20 pieces of construction paper in different colors and set these out in piles on the tables) o Glue (glue is on shelves in workroom) o Pencils (pencils are in a cup in the checkout desk)

Lesson: o Read the book to students. Pause periodically for students to make predictions about what will happen next. o Have students share their favorite part of the story. o Have students work at the tables to make their own bugliest bug (they can color it or use construction paper scraps). o Have students fill in the blanks at the bottom of the page to describe their bug. o Have students share their bugs. Fairy Tale s

Materials: o Any fairy tale (Cinderella, Rapunzel, Rumplestiltskin, etc.) – fairy tales are in the Nonfiction section in the 398’s. o Fairy Tale character page o Crayons (crayon buckets are on shelves in workroom) o Pencils (pencils are in a cup in the checkout desk)

Lesson: o Read the book to students. Pause periodically for students to make predictions about what will happen next. o Have students share their favorite part of the story. o Have students move to the tables and complete the “Fairy Tale Character” page. o If there’s extra time, students may draw a picture of the character on the back of their page. Encyclopedia Brown

Materials: o Any Encyclopedia Brown book by Donald J. Sobol (found in the Fiction section – F Sob)

Lesson: o Explain to students that Encyclopedia Brown is a boy detective and that the books are made up of several different mysteries and that you will be reading some to them today. Each short story mystery contains the clues they need to solve it so they should listen carefully. o Read a mystery to the class. Pause at the end of each story to allow students time to think about the question at the end. o Have students share their answers then turn to the page mentioned and read what it says. o Repeat with other mysteries from the book. Partner Reading

Materials: o Books from the Class Set section:  Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday  Bedtime for Frances  A Birthday for Frances  Corduroy  The Egyptian Cinderella  Nate the Great and the Monster Mess  Nate the Great and the Sticky Case  A Pocket for Corduroy  When the TV Broke

Lesson: o Explain to students they will be reading short AR books with a partner or by themselves today. o Show students the book choices. o Either let students pick their partner or you pair them up. Have students spread around the library to read their books. Emergency Plans for Third Grade

Berenstain Bears

Materials: o Any Berenstain Bears book by Stan & Jan Berenstain (found in the Everyone section – E Ber) o Any Berenstain Bears video (in the Video/DVD section – VID E Ber) o TV with VCR

Lesson: o Read the book to students. Pause periodically for students to make predictions about what will happen next. o Have students share their favorite part. o Show students the Berenstain Bears video.
