EPSY 542 Career Development Procedures and Practices Spring 2007

Purpose: Students will learn about theories and interventions used in career counseling.

Objectives: 1. Students will demonstrate an integrated understanding of career development theory. 2. Students will demonstrate competence conducting a career assessment interview. 3. Students will demonstrate competence evaluating career development resources. 4. Students will demonstrate an awareness of multicultural variables embedded in career development. 5. Students will demonstrate competence using and interpreting career interest inventories. 7. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the career decision making process.

Supplies: Materials needed to build your portfolio (unique to each student).

Grades: Grades are based upon the following points: Attendance, Class Participation, & Quizzes 100 points Papers 1 200 points Exam 1 100 points Paper 2 50 points Paper 3 50 points Paper 4 50 points Paper 5 200 points Final Exam 50 points Total points possible: 800 points available Extra Credit is available for Students demonstrating competence developing portfolios and resumes. 25 points are available for a professional resume, and 25 points are available for a portfolio.

Letter grades will be based upon the following point totals: A = 720 to 800 points B = 640 to 719 points C = 560 to 639 points

Attendance and Class Participation: Attendance is expected. Effective class participation includes: respectful and non- dominating involvement in class discussions, and showing initiative and investment in classroom activities. Quizzes may be given from time to time.

Requirements for papers: All papers must be typed using APA style. Margins will be 1" top, bottom, and sides. Font may be any standard font no larger than 12 points. It is expected that your paper will be your own work. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

Exam I: (March 1) The midterm examination will cover the major theories in the text, and all class lecture material through Feb. 22. The exam will utilize a brief essay response format.

Decision Making Interview Report – Paper 1: (DUE: February 22) 200 Points This project will give you an opportunity to interview someone who is in the process of making a new career choice or career change decision. You will be expected to utilize the decision making skills discussed in class when conducting the interview.

The report is a paper which sums up what you found and did during your interview. A summary of the requirement of this paper is in Appendix A.

Integrating Super and Gottfredson – Paper 2: (Due March 29) 50 points Write a 2 to 3 page paper which integrates Super’s model of career development of children with Gottredson’s Theory of Circumscription, compromise, and self-creation. Illustrate your analysis with an aspect or portion of your own childhood history which you view as a turning point in your view of your future.

Illustrating Super’s Theory of Adolescent/Adult Life Stages – Paper 3: (Due April 19) 50 points Discuss a critical turning point in you own life/career path by applying Super’s theory. Discuss you life stage at the time of the occurrence, and your transition through subsequent substages. Also discuss any changes in self-concept that occurred, as well as changes in values and roles played in the context of Super’s theory (Ch. 7, 8, & 9). Length = 4 pages, 50 points. Drawing Similarities between Social Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Super’s Theory – Paper 4: (Due April 26) 50 points In three pages, draw parallels between one similar aspect which occurs in Social Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Super’s Theory. Illustrate this concept/aspect with an experience from your own life. Discuss the similarities and differences between theories on this one aspect. Length = 3 pages, 50 points.

Theory Integration Paper – Paper 5: (DUE: May 3) 200 Points This paper will demonstrate your skill at integrating theoretical perspectives explored in class. This will also function as a position paper regarding your philosophy of effective career intervention. A summary of the requirements of this paper is in Appendix C .

Final Exam: TBA, unless class schedule allows for an earlier time. The final examination will measure your assessment and intervention planning skills. It will present you with several client scenarios for you to examine and interpret.

Policy on late assignments: 8 points (1% of your final course grade) will be lost per day the assignment is late. This includes weekends and holidays. It would be to your advantage to send the assignment electronically as an e-mail attachment if you are not able to attend class.

This project will give you an opportunity to interview someone who is in the process of making a new career choice or career change decision. You will be expected to utilize the decision making skills discussed in class when conducting the interview. (Appendix B is a rubric for grading this paper. Of the 140 content points available, point values will be assigned for each content section as reported below.)

The paper reporting this interview should contain the following information: 1. Presenting Issue: (15 points) a. What issue(s) make this client appropriate for career counseling at this time? b. What is currently going on in the client’s life that may relate to his or her adjustment to the world of work?

2. Work and Career History: (15 points) a. What is the client’s work history or his or her career path? b. Have there been any obstacles blocking this client’s career path? c. What are the present obstacles this client has had to career goals?

3. Family Information: (15 points) a. What influences has the client’s family had on his or her career choices? b. What kind of support or lack of support is evident?

4. Marital Information: (15 points) a. What kind of support or lack of support does the client have in his or her marital relationship? b. How do the client’s goals and values differ from his or her spouse? Explain.

5. Assessment Information: (15 points) a. What inventories were administered? b. What was your interpretation of these instruments? c. Name any inconsistencies in the results of these inventories.

6. What are your initial hypotheses about your client at this point? (15 points)

7. How do the various career theories in the trait and factor section apply to your client? (25 points)

Appendix C PAPER 5 – An Analysis of a Character in the Movie “Sideways”

For this paper, you need to view the movie “Sideways.” Each of the two main characters is at an impasse in their careers and in their lives. Your assignment is to write a case presentation on one of these characters. In your paper, pay special attention to the various career theories we have studied: (a) note which theories help explain the character’s behavior, (b) explain how you would integrate these various theories, given the complexities of the character, and (c) note which theories (or parts of theories) would lead to the client making healthier choices, explaining in a practical sense how you would use interventions. Please plan your paper carefully and use APA style .

The paper reporting this interview should contain the following information: 9. Presenting Issue: (10 points) What is currently going on in the client’s life that may relate to his or her adjustment to the world of work and basic adjustment to life?

10. Work and Career History: (10 points) What is the client’s work history or his or her career path? Have there been any obstacles blocking this client’s career path? What are the present obstacles this client has had to career goals?

13. What are your initial hypotheses about your client at this point? What choices has he made that helps/hinders his life-path. What adjustments has he made/not made? (20 points)

14. How do the various career theories in the trait and factor section apply to your client? (60 points)

15. What are your plans for your client at this point? (20 points) What career information are you going to explore? Are there family issues to explore? What other personal issues may need to be explored before making a decision on a career direction?
