READ THE TEXT AND FOCUS ON SIGNAL WORDS

1. a. You are going to read a text with the title The Passion. Have you heard of The Passion before? Do you know what it is? Discuss in a small group. b. Look at the picture. What do you see? What does the picture have to do with The Passion?

2. Read the text. Use the Step-by-Step Reading Guide. Use the Word help if you come across a word you don’t understand.

3. Read the explanation.

In a text a writer uses all sorts of signal words to connect clauses.

Some examples of signal words are: and, but, or, because, also, too, however, when, yet, now, first, second, third

Look for example at the difference between the following sentences: They can reach many people and earn money. They can reach many people but not earn money. They can reach many people or earn money. They can reach many people and also earn money. They can reach many people because they earn money. They can reach many people, however, they do not earn money. When they can reach many people they can earn money. They can reach many people, now they can earn money.

Pay attention to these words. The meaning of a sentence could be different with another signal word.

PAST AND PRESENT TENSE Some parts of the text are written in the past tense, for example On Sunday, March 20th it was on TV for the first time in America. Other parts of the text are written in de present tense, for example The show is popular for a number of reasons. Below you will find some pieces of the text about The Passion.

In English, there are regular and irregular verbs. If a verb is regular, you see the following form in the past simple: +ed For instance: wash-ed; play-ed; film-ed; broadcast-ed; repeat-ed.

But many verbs are irregular, they have an irregular past simple form. For instance: find – found; come – came; go – went; run – ran; know – knew.

Rewrite the following into the present tense.

The idea for the musical [came] from Jacco Doornbos. When he [found out] that only 25% of the Dutch people [knew] what Easter [was] about, he [wanted] to do something about that.
