SOCCER UNIT 1ST SIX WEEKS GRADES 4 AND 5

1. Introduce Soccer to students. Talk about the origin of soccer Skills needed to play soccer Equipment needed Team Sport versus Individual sport

2. Skills Dribbling: To get the ball to go where you want it to go Inside of foot Outside of foot Toe H eel

Passing the ball: A way of getting the ball to a teammate and a way to get it down the field Pass the ball ahead of the person so they can run to the ball

Traps: Used to stop the ball, gain control, and fool your opponent Foot: Can use Left or Right foot to stop the ball Knee: Can use Left or Right knee to stop the ball Shin: Use the area between your ankles and knees

Shooting for a Goal: Shoot from front and side of goal Must stay out of the goal Goal is worth 1 point After a goal is made, the ball goes back to the middle of the field for another kickoff. The team that did not score the goal, kicks off.

Goalie Skills: Goalie is unique player who can touch the ball Has enclosed area to himself Can throw or roll ball away from goal Can put the ball down on the ground and kick it Can punt the ball Can drop kick the ball Everyone must be 15 feet away from the goal when goalie is kicking the ball

Fouls: Infractions of the rules for which you get a free kick Must take the foul where it occurs All players must be 15 feet away from person kicking Examples of fouls – pushing, tripping, kicking, throwing the ball at someone

Other Important Information: Ball goes out of bounds – brought back in bounds with a 2 Handed Overhead throw in One team wears pinnie one day and the next day the other team wears it. This tells one team from the other One team kicks off one day and the next day the other team kicks off There are 4 rows of players – forwards play on the 1st row, halfbacks play on the 2nd row, fullbacks play on the 3rd row, and the goalie plays on the 4th row Game is started with a kickoff in the middle of the field After goal is scored, the other team gets to kickoff the ball in the middle of the field

3. Playing a Game: Students put on one of eight teams and actually play a soccer game. They play a different team every third day. Encouraged to play a different position every day until they have played all positions.

Week 4: How many times during a game can you take the ball away from the other team? Why are you successful or unsuccessful? Week 5: What skills make you a good soccer player?

Week 6: Which is your favorite position to play? Why do you like it? what makes that a good position to play?
