2016 Game Recaps – Varsity

June 2 vs. Coon Rapids

Coon Rapids defeated Mounds View 9-5 on Thursday in the Section 5AAAA playoffs.

The Mustangs jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st aided by 3 errors by Coon Rapids.

Coon Rapids scored 7 in the bottom of the 1st aided by 3 errors on the part of the Mustangs.

The Mustangs responded with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd to make it a ballgame at 7-5.

The Mustangs put runners in scoring position in the 4th and 5th innings, but were unable to score.

In the bottom of the 6th, Coon Rapids added 2 insurance runs to create the 9-5 final.

Trevor Stephan stated on the mound for the Mustangs, and deserved a better fate. Miscues in the field led to all 7 Coon Rapids runs in the 1st. Dan Cline relieved in the 1st and pitched outstanding baseball to give his team a chance to win – he went 4 and 2/3 innings, allowing 0 runs, 0 hits, 2 walks and he struck out 2. Erik Holloman and Justin Langer finished on the mound for the Mustangs.

Offensively for the Mustangs:  Jeff LeMay was 1 for 2, 2B, HBP, 2 Runs Scored and 1 RBI  Ryan Nickel was 1 for 3, BB, 2 Runs Scored  Nick Lovdahl had a multi-hit day going 2 for 4  Bo Lovdahl was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI’s  Ty Koehn was 1 for 2, BB, and a run scored  Ross Indlecoffer had an RBI and was 1 for 4

Coon Rapids advances in the losers bracket to face Centennial who defeated Irondale today. This is the second Section 5AAAA Playoff loss for the Mustangs and ends their season.

June 1 vs. Totino-Grace

Totino-Grace defeated Mounds View 3-2 on Wednesday in the second round of the Section 5AAAA playoffs.

Matthew Laursen pitched well for the Mustangs in the loss, allowing 3 earned runs, 5 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 2. Totino Grace’s Zach Jezierski pitched equally well to earn the win, allowing 2 earned runs, 6 hits, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. The Mustangs threatened in the top of the first with Ryan Nickel and Jeff LeMay leading off the game with base hits, but the Mustangs were unable to score.

In the 2nd, Erik Holloman led off with a base hit, was sacrificed to 2B by Holden Schmidt, and a Ty Koehn ground ball eventually scored Holloman.

The game stayed at 1-0 until the Eagles produced 4 hits in the bottom of the 4th and put up 3 runs to take a 3-1 lead.

The Mustangs produced a threat in the top of the 7th when Holloman led off with a walk, and Schmidt followed with a single. Nate Fredrickson sacrificed them into scoring position. A Koehn ground ball scored Dimitri Fatsis who was running for Holloman, and advanced Schmidt to 3B where he would be remain to end the game.

Holden Schmidt produced a multi-hit day, going 2/2 with a sacrifice bunt. Erik Holloman was 1/2 with a walk and a run scored. Ty Koehn produced 2 RBI’s.

Mounds View moves to the losers bracket and is scheduled to play on Friday, June 3 at 2:00PM at Wintercrest Park in Coon Rapids. Win that game, and the Mustangs would play a second game on Friday immediately after the first game.

There was some discussion by the Section Tournament Director at the field today about the possibility of moving Friday's games to Thursday (tomorrow) due to rain forecast for Friday and the challenge of trying to play games on Saturday with field availability issues. May 31 vs. Park Center

Mounds View defeated Park Center 9-0 at Mounds View High School in the first round of the Section 5AAAA playoffs.

Bo Lovdahl pitched exceptionally well; going 6 shutout innings, allowing just 1 hit, and striking out 6. Lovdahl set the tone early in striking out the side in the top of the 1st. To preserve pitches for his next Section pitching outing, Lovdahl turned it over to Dan Cline who closed out the 7th, striking out 2, to preserve the shutout victory.

The Mustangs jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. They added 2 in the 2nd to take a 5-0 lead, and added 2 insurance runs in both the 5th and 6th innings.

Defensively, the Mustangs turned 2 double plays:  Erik Holloman (6) to Ryan Nickel (4) to Carter Rholl (3) inning ending double play in the top of the 3rd with 2 baserunners on board.  A high line drive that Ross Indlecoffer snared and then doubled off the runner at 2B on a throw to Nickel to end the top of the 6th.

Offensively, 8 players scored, and 9 players reached base safely. Nickel (2 RBI), Nick Lovdahl (2 RBI), and Holden Schmidt (1 RBI) delivered 2-out RBI base hits. Four players had multi-hit days:  Nick Lovdahl: 2/3, 1 R, 3 RBI’s  Nickel: 2/3, 2 Runs, 2 RBI’s  Bo Lovdahl: 2/4, RBI  Holden Schmidt: 2/4, 1 Run, 1 RBI

The Mustangs advance in winners bracket play to face Totino-Grace on Wednesday, June 1 @ 2:00PM @ Wintercrest Park in Coon Rapids. Totino-Grace defeated Irondale 9-0 to advance.

May 21 vs. Roseville

Mounds View defeated Roseville 12-2 in 6 innings on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The game was played at the University of Northwestern as part of the Suburban East Conference Showcase day. The facilities at the University of Northwestern are outstanding.

The Mustangs threatened and were unable to score in the 1st, but put 3 on the board in the 2nd inning. Erik Holloman and Nate Fredrickson got on base to start the inning, and Holden Schmidt sacrifice bunted them into scoring position. Ryan Nickel delivered a 2- out 2 RBI double, and Jeff LeMay followed with a base hit to score Nickel on a close play at the plate.

The Raiders responded with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd to make it a close game at 3-2.

The Mustangs took advantage of 5 walks and hits by Ross Indlecoffer, Holloman, and Nick Lovdahl (2B, 2 RBI) to tack on 7 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 10-2 lead.

Nickel scored his 3rd run of the game on a LeMay base hit in the 5th to make it 11-1.

In the 6th, Dimitti Fatsis delivered the game ending base hit to score Riley Flanagan who was seeing his first varsity action.

Bo Lovdahl started on the mound for the Mustangs. He cruised through the first 2 innings, encountered a rough 3rd, and bounced back nicely with a 1-2-3 4th inning to earn the win. Dan Cline provided outstanding relief, facing 1 over the minimum in pitching the 5th and 6th.

Offensively, the Mustangs produced 13 hits and worked 8 walks. Eight Mustangs batters recorded hits on the day. Nick Lovdahl was 3/3 with a double, a walk, a Run and 2 RBI’s. Nickel was 2/3 with 2 doubles, a walk, 3 Runs and 3 RBI’s. LeMay was 2/3 with a walk and 3 RBI’s. Holloman was 2/4 with 2 Runs. Fatsis was 1/1 with 2 Runs and 1 RBI. Nate Fredrickson and Schmidt also produced RBI’s in the game.

Defensively, the Mustangs made the plays in the field. Ty Koehn, playing LF, threw out a runner at 3B, Indlecoffer applying the tag, when the Raiders were rallying in the 3rd inning which likely saved a couple of runs.

The Mustangs finish the regular season at 11-9 (8-8 Conference).

Seeding for the Section 5AAAA playoffs will be done next Friday, May 27. The Mustangs, Coon Rapids and Centennial are tightly bunched for consideration for seeds 3, 4 and 5. The Section coaches vote to determine Section seeding.

May 18 at White Bear Lake

Mounds View defeated White Bear Lake 7-3 on Wednesday at White Bear Lake.

Matthew Laursen went all 7 innings on the mound for the Mustangs, shutting out the Bears through 6. The Bears mounted a rally in the bottom of the 7th, but Laursen held on for the complete game victory. Laursen allowed 1 earned run, surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk, and struck out 3.

Three of the Mustangs 6 hits on the day were home runs. Bo Lovdahl hit a solo shot in the 2nd, Nick Lovdahl followed up with a 2-run home run in the 3rd, and Ryan Nickel added an insurance run with a solo home run in the 6th. The other 3 hits were produced by Nickel, Nate Fredrickson and Holden Schmidt. Schmidt also provided a walk, a sac bunt, a stolen base, and scored a run. Mike Scholl was on-base 3 times with 3 walks and scored a run.

The Mustangs close out the regular season vs. Roseville at Northwestern College on Saturday, May 21 at 11:30AM, playing the first game of an all-day slate of Suburban East Conference games at Northwestern.

May 16 at Cretin-Derham Hall

Cretin-Derham Hall defeated Mounds View 5-0 on Monday at Cretin-Derham Hall. Cretin’s Jack Johnson was the story in this game, throwing a 2 hit shutout while striking out 8. The Mustangs put runners on 1B and 2B in the first inning, and from there on, Johnson faced the minimum 3 batters in innings 2-7.

Both teams produced some nice defensive plays. Ryan Nickel was robbed of a double on a diving catch of a ball in the LF gap. The Mustangs turned a Nickel (6) to Bo Lovdahl (4) to Carter Rholl (3) double play. James Hayden made a nice catch and throw back to 2B to double up a runner for a double play. Nate Fredrickson threw out a baserunner attempting to steal 2B. Ross Indlecoffer made a very nice play to execute an out in a sacrifice bunt situation. And, Jeff LeMay tracked down a deep fly ball while running up the hill near the CF fence.

Holden Schmidt started on the mound for the Mustangs and went 3 and 2/3. Justin Langer went the final 2 and 1/3 innings.

The Mustangs hits were recorded by Indlecoffer and Bo Lovdahl. Fredrickson worked a walk off Johnson.

The Mustangs travel to White Bear Lake on Wednesday, May 18 at 4:30PM.

May 13 vs. Park

Park won a pitchers duel 2-1 in 8 innings at Mounds View High School on Friday.

The Mustangs ran into a tough pitcher for the 2nd day in a row. Park’s Brandon Alt went all 8 innings, scattering 4 hits and 4 walks, and striking out 7 for the win. The Mustangs’ Bo Lovdahl was just as dominant, going 7 innings, allowing only 2 hits and 2 walks, and striking out 7.

There was no score through 6 innings.

The Wolfpack pushed a run across in the top of the 7th to take the 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs tied it up in the bottom half of the 7th. Nick Lovdahl led off the inning with a base hit, and Erik Holloman sacrificed him to 2B. Carter Rholl then delivered a clutch double to right field to score Lovdahl with the tying run. With Rholl at 2B, Nate Fredrickson lined a ball in the hole on the right side - the Park 2B’man saved the game for them with a diving stab and throw out of Fredrickson at 1B. Rholl advanced to 3B on the play, but was stranded there to extend the game to the 8th.

Park scored in the top of the 8th, and Alt shut down the Mustangs in the bottom half to take the victory. Offensively for the Mustangs, Bo Lovdahl, Nick Lovdahl, Jeff LeMay and Carter Rholl (2B) had the 4 hits.

It was Senior Day – the senior players and parents were recognized before the game.

The Mustangs drop to 9-8 (6-7 Conference) on the season, and travel to Cretin-Derham Hall on Monday at 4:30PM.

May 12 vs. Forest Lake

Forest Lake defeated Mounds View 3-0 at Mounds View High School on Thursday. The Rangers maintained their #4 state ranking and first place in the Suburban East Conference with the win. The Mustangs move to 9-7 on the season, 6-6 in the Suburban East Conference.

Trevor Stephan started on the mound for the Mustangs, and kept the game at 0-0 through his 4 innings of work, scattering 4 hits and 2 walks, and he struck out 2. Dan Cline relieved and went the final 3 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 1 hit and 2 walks.

The Mustangs were unable to solve Rangers pitcher Cam Kline who was extremely efficient in throwing only 69 pitches on the day for his complete game shutout victory. He allowed 5 hits and 0 walks, and struck out 5.

Nate Fredrickson had 2 hits, one a double. Bo Lovdahl had the other multi-hit day with a pair of singles. Ryan Nickel recorded the other base hit for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs host Park on Friday, May 13 at 4:30PM. It is Senior Day – Senior Players and Parents will be recognized before the game at 4:20PM.

May 10 @ Stillwater

Mounds View defeated Stillwater 6-1 on Tuesday at Stillwater High School.

As has been the case most often this season it seems, the Mustangs faced the opponent’s #1 pitcher. The Mustangs were able to score 4 runs through 5 innings (2 runs in the 3rd and 2 runs in the 5th), and force a new pitcher for the 6th with his pitch count high. The Mustangs tacked on 2 more in the 6th to insure the victory.

Matthew Laursen started and went 5 solid innings to earn the victory, allowing 1 run, scattering 7 hits and 0 walks, and striking out 1. Laursen kept the Ponies off-balance; they were unable to square up the baseball on this day. The Ponies scored their lone run in the 1st inning, and had the bases loaded with 1 out threatening for more - Laursen retired the next 2 batters to keep the score at 1-0. After the 1st inning, Laursen faced 2 over the minimum in his remaining 4 innings. Erik Holloman pitched the 6th and 7th; facing 1 over the minimum, walking 1 and striking out 2.

Defensively, the Mustangs turned in some nice plays. Plays in this game included: two tough ground ball plays at 1B by Ross Indlecoffer, a leaping grab of a line drive by Ryan Nickel and throw to 2B (Holloman) for an inning ending double play, a leaping grab of a line drive by Bo Lovdahl, Jeff LeMay tracking down and catching a ball hit in the gap, and Nate Fredrickson throwing out a would be base stealer.

Offensively, the Mustangs threatened much of the game; batting 5 players or more in 4 innings (5,6,6,7) of the game. Nickel had a multi-hit game; 3/4 with an RBI and a run scored. Ty Koehn was 1/1 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored. Bo Lovdahl was 1/2 with 2 walks and an RBI.

The Mustangs move to 9-6 (6-5 Conference), and host Suburban East Conference leader Forest Lake on Wednesday, May 11 at 4:30PM.

May 7 vs. Irondale

Mounds View defeated Irondale 11-3 on Saturday at Mounds View High School.

It was SAYB Day, with many youth baseball players in attendance. The Diamond Club provided food, prizes and a Radar Gun station for all youth in attendance. The VFW, led by Joe Mauricio, provided a color guard for the National Anthem which was sung by baseball manager Emma Hoyhtya.

The game was scoreless through 2 innings. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Mustangs put up 6 runs on 6 hits. Adding 3 runs in the 4th, the score became 9-0. Irondale scored their 3 runs in the 5th, and the Mustangs finished the scoring with 2 insurance runs in the 6th.

Holden Schmidt started on the mound and earned his 3rd win on the season, going 4 and 2/3 innings, allowing 0 earned runs on 6 hits and 1 walk, and striking out 1. Justin Langer finished the final 2 and 1/3, allowing 3 hits and 0 walks.

Defensively, the Mustangs turned 3 double plays on the day. Ryan Nickel, Erik Holloman and Ross Indlecoffer were involved in 2 of them, and Mike Scholl and Bo Lovdahl were each involved in one double play.

Offensively, the Mustangs produced 13 hits and 2 walks. Nine players had hits. Multi- hit days were turned in by Bo Lovdahl (2/3, 2 R, 2 RBI), Ross Indlecoffer (2/3, 2 R, RBI), Ryan Nickel (2/3, 3B, 2 R), and Nate Fredrickson (2/4). Base hits were also produced by Jeff LeMay, Mike Scholl, Erik Holloman, Schmidt, and Ty Koehn. Following a 1-3 start in week 1 of the season, the Mustangs have gone 7-3 the past 3 weeks to currently stand at 8-6 (5-5 Conference, 3-1 Non-Conference). There are 2 weeks and 6 games remaining in the regular season. Next week, the Mustangs travel to Stillwater on Monday, host Forest Lake on Wednesday, and host Park on Friday for Senior Day.

May 5, 2016 vs. White Bear Lake

The Mustangs defeated White Bear Lake 5-4.

This game started on Wednesday, April 27 and was called due to rain after 2 innings of play with the score tied at 3-3.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. Ryan Nickel and Jeff LeMay led off the inning with singles, and Ross Indlecoffer was HBP to load the bases with 0 outs. Bo Lovdahl grounded to the 3B’man who threw home to force out Nickel. A wild pitch score LeMay and Nick Lovdahl delivered a 2-run single to finish the scoring.

The Bears responded with 3 of their own in the top of 2 on 4 hits in the inning.

Rain suspended the game at this point, tied at 3-3 with one out in the top of the 3rd.

When play resumed today, the Mustangs were shorthanded due to a couple of injuries that occurred since the game began last week.

Mounds View broke the tie in the bottom of the 4th when Carter Rholl led off the inning with a base hit. Nate Fredrickson sacrificed Rholl to 2B, and Ryan Nickel eventually knocked in Rholl with a 2-out double.

The Bears evened it up in the top of the 5th with 3 straight base hits.

The Mustangs scored their 5th run in the bottom of the 6th when Erik Holloman led off the inning with a base hit. Dimitri Fatsis ran for Holloman so he could warm-up to pitch the 7th. A Rholl BB put runners on 1B and 2B, and Fredrickson again delivered a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up. Ty Koehn delivered a base hit to score what would be the winning run in Fatsis.

Dan Cline started on the mound for the continuation of the game today, and pitched 3 and 2/3 innings for the win, allowing 1 run, 5 hits, 1 BB, and striking out 1. Holloman closed out a perfect 7th inning for the save.

Ryan Nickel registered a multi-hit game: 3/4, 2B, RBI. Nick Lovdahl (2) and Koehn (1) also had RBI’s for the game. The Mustangs host Irondale this Saturday, May 7 @ 1:00PM. It is Shoreview Area Youth Baseball Day – there will be prizes, food and games for youth baseball players in attendance.

May 4, 2016 vs. East Ridge

The Raptors defeated the Mustangs 6-5 at Mounds View High School. East Ridge moves to 5-6, and the Mustangs drop to 6-6.

The Mustangs scored in the bottom of the 1st when Ross Indlecoffer, Bo Lovdahl and Nick Lovdahl all singled with 2 outs.

The Raptors scored 3 in the top of the 2nd and 3 in the top of the 4th to take a 6-1 lead. The Mustangs did not execute well defensively, and that aided the Raptors in building the 5 run lead.

The Mustangs produced a rally in the bottom of the 7th to score 4 runs and come within 1 run of tying the game. The game ended with the bases loaded. In the inning, hits by Mike Scholl (RBI), Nickel (2B), Indlecoffer (RBI), Nick Lovdahl (2B, 2 RBI), and walks by Erik Holloman, Ty Koehn and Holden Schmidt created the rally that fell just short.

Bo Lovdahl started on the mound for the Mustangs, and Trevor Stephen provided 3 innings of scoreless relief to keep the game within reach.

Offensively, multi-hit days were turned in by:  Indlecoffer: 3/4, 2R, RBI  Nick Lovdahl: 2/3, 2B, BB, R, 3 RBI  Nickel: 2/4, 2 2B, R

The Mustangs host White Bear Lake on Thursday, May 5 at 4:30PM. This is the continuation of a suspended game from last week. The game begins with 1 out in the top of the 3rd, with the score tied 3-3.

May 2, 2016 @ Woodbury

The Mustangs defeated Woodbury 10-7 at Woodbury High School on Monday. Woodbury moves to 9-3 and Mounds View to 6-5 on the season.

Matthew Laursen made his first varsity start and pitched well against a good hitting team; going 4 and 2/3 innings, yielding 4 runs on 7 hits and 1 BB, and striking out 1. Justin Langer came in relief, and Eric Holloman closed out the final out of the game when the Royals made it interesting at the end. The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st – Ryan Nickel singled to open the game and Jeff LeMay then walked. Ross Indlecoffer’s double scored Nickel, and a Bo Lovdahl sac fly scored LeMay.

The Mustangs extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the 5th when Bo Lovdahl tripled home Nickel and LeMay with 2 outs.

Woodbury tied the game at 4-4 with 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th.

The Mustangs immediately battled back, and put 6 on the board in the top of the 6th to make the score 10-4. Clutch 2-out AB’s by Nickel and LeMay plated the first 3 runs, Indlecoffer kept things going with a HBP, and then Bo Lovdahl finished the scoring with a 3-run HR.

The Royals produced 3 runs in the top of the 7th to make the final 10-7.

The Mustangs host East Ridge on Wednesday, May 4 @ 4:30PM.

April 29, 2016 @ Roseville

Mounds View defeated Roseville 8-2 at Siebert Field on Friday. Thanks to the Mounds View Diamond Club and the Roseville Baseball Booster Club for providing the opportunity to play at this great facility.

Holden Schmidt earned his second win on the season, pitching 4 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and striking out 3. Dan Cline held the Raiders for the next 2 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and striking out 2. Erik Holloman closed things out in pitching the 7th, allowing 0 runs and walking 2.

The Mustangs defense turned in some good plays in the game. A Ryan Nickel (4) to Holloman (6) to Ross Indlecoffer (3) double play snuffed out a Raiders rally in the 4th with the score at 3-1. Jeff LeMay doubled a runner off first base after recording a line drive out in CF. And, Nickel ended the game with a diving play on a ground ball behind 2B and throwing onto 1B for the final out. Offensively, the Mustangs recorded 13 hits on the day. Multi-hit days were turned in by Bo Lovdahl (4/4, 2 R, 2B, 3 RBI), Holloman (2/4, R, 2 RBI), LeMay (2/4, 2B, R, RBI), and Nick Lovdahl (2/4, 2B, R). Mike Scholl (2B), Holden Schmidt, and Ryan Nickel also recorded hits for the Mustangs.

Mounds View completes the first half of their 20 game schedule at 5-5. They begin the 2nd time through the Suburban East Conference schedule on Monday at Woodbury at 4:30PM.

April 26, 2016 vs. Cretin-Derham Hall

Cretin-Derham Hall stayed unbeaten at 7-0 in defeating Mounds View 6-2 at Mounds View High School on Tuesday. Mounds View falls to 4-5 on the season.

The Mustangs did not execute well enough offensively or defensively to win the game. They squandered two scoring opportunities early with offensive miscues. And, physical and mental errors led to the Raiders scoring 3 runs in the top of the 4th to take a 3-0 lead. The Raiders never looked back from there, scoring 2 more in the 5th and adding another insurance run in the 6th.

The Mustangs broke up the shutout in the bottom of the 6th. Ross Indlecoffer led off with a walk, Nick Lovdahl traded places at 1B with a fielders choice, and Erik Holloman doubled to drive in Lovdahl.

The Mustangs threatened in the 7th, coming within one batter of putting the tying run at the plate. Carter Rholl led off with a HBP, and Nate Fredrickson followed with a walk. A Ryan Nickel single scored Rholl, and the Mustangs were then down 4 with 2 on and 0 outs. Cretin-Derham Hall reliever Jack Johnson retired the next 3 batters to end the game.

Bo Lovdahl started for the Mustangs on the mound and went 5 innings. Matt Laursen pitched the final 2 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits.

The Mustangs turned two Holloman (6) to Nickel (4) to Rholl (3) double plays on the day.

Raiders pitching held the Mustangs to 3 hits on the day; Nickel, Indlecoffer and Holloman with the base hits. Nickel (1) and Indlecoffer (2) had walks to go with their hits.

The Mustangs host White Bear Lake on Wednesday, April 27 at 4:30PM.

April 22, 2016 @ Park Mounds View evened their record at 4-4 by defeating Park 9-4 on Friday at Park High School.

The Mustangs jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Ryan Nickel and Jeff LeMay started the game with back-to-back base hits to get things started. Nickel, Ross Indlecoffer, and Bo Lovdahl scored in the inning, with Bo Lovdahl and Nick Lovdahl recording RBI’s.

The Wolfpack responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st, and tacked on single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to take a 4-3 lead.

The Mustangs threatened throughout the 2nd through 6th innings, stranding 8 runners, including 4 in scoring position, with no runs to show for it.

In the 7th, the Mustangs finally broke through and scored 6 runs. Nick Lovdahl led off with a base hit. Mike Scholl successfully sacrifice bunted, and a Park miscue on the play put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Erik Holloman then delivered a 2-run double to score Nick Lovdahl and Carter Rholl (running for Scholl) to give the Mustangs a 5-4 lead. The Mustangs went on to plate 4 more in the inning with Indlecoffer providing an RBI and Nick Lovdahl delivering his 2nd hit of the inning for an RBI.

Many productive days at the plate were turned in for the Mustangs:  Nick Lovdahl: 3 for 4, BB, R, 2 RBI, SB  Jeff LeMay: 3 for 5, R  Nickel: 2 for 3, 2 R, BB, Sac Bunt, SB  Holloman: 2 for 4, 2B, R, 2 RBI, SB  Indlecoffer: 2 for 4, 2 R, RBI, SB  Bo Lovdahl: 1 for 3, 2 BB, R, RBI, SB  Nate Fredrickson’s base hit rounded out the 14 hits on the day for the Mustangs

Four Mustangs pitchers delivered for their teammates in this game. Dan Cline started and went 2 innings. Trevor Stephan pitched 3 scoreless innings and allowed just 1 hit. Justin Langer then provided a scoreless inning and allowed 1 hit. Holloman closed it out with a 1-2-3 7th inning. Stephen and Langer held the Wolfpack scoreless in the middle of the game, keeping the Mustangs in the game, until the Mustangs could break through in the 7th. The lone strikeout for the Mustangs was recorded by Holloman.

Defensively, the Mustangs recorded a double play with Nickel fielding the ground ball, tagging the runner from first, and throwing on to Indlecoffer to complete the play.

The Mustangs (4-4 Overall, 2-3 Conference) host Suburban East Conference leading Cretin-Derham Hall (6-0 Overall, 6-0 Conference) on Monday at 4:30PM.

April 20, 2016 @ Forest Lake Forest Lake defeated the Mustangs 4-1 at Schumacher on Wednesday night.

Forest Lake starter Matt Wallner was dominant through 4 innings with 9 K’s.

In the 5th, the Mustangs rallied to score a run: Erik Holloman led off with a BB and stole 2B. Carter Rholl advanced Holloman to 3B with a ground ball, and Holloman scored on a wild pitch. Matt Laursen, in his first varsity AB, walked to get things started again. Ryan Nickel reached on a bunt single, and Jeff LeMay singled to load the bases with 1 out. Wallner struck out the final 2 batters to work out of the jam with no further damage. In striking out 2 more in the 5th to end the inning, Wallner finished the day with 11 K’s in his 5 innings of work.

The Mustangs were unable to mount a threat in the final two innings.

Holden Schmidt started for the Mustangs. Matt Laursen (2 and 1/3 innings) and Justin Langer (1 inning) worked scoreless and hitless relief.

Offensively, Ryan Nickel had the lone multi-hit day, going 2/4. Nick Lovdahl and Jeff LeMay had the other 2 hits for the Mustangs.

Mounds View travels to Park on Friday, April 22 at 4:30PM.

April 19, 2016 vs. Centennial

The Mustangs evened their record at 3-3 in defeating Centennial 11-1 in 6 innings at Mounds View High School.

Nick Lovdahl started and went 5 scoreless innings, giving up just 3 hits and 1 walk, and striking out 3. Trevor Stephan pitched the 6th for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs committed 0 errors for the second day in a row. Ryan Nickel was busy at 2B, recording 4 outs and 3 assists. The Mustangs turned a Ross Indlecoffer (5) to Nickel (4) to Carter Rholl (3) double play to end the top of the 5th inning.

Offensively, the Mustangs produced 12 hits on the day; 7 players recording a hit.  Nickel was 3/3 with 2 Runs, Triple, and 2 RBI’s  Indlecoffer was 2/3 with a Run, Double, and 4 RBI’s  Bo Lovdahl was 2/3 with a Double, Run, and an RBI  Rholl was 2/2 with 2 Runs.  In addition to an outstanding pitching performance, Nick Lovdahl produced a hit and an RBI.  Dan Cline singled in his first varsity AB  Mike Scholl ended the game in the bottom of the 6th with a 2-run double.  Four stolen bases were recorded: Joe Hagen, Jeff LeMay, Rholl, and Nickel.  LeMay produced 3 quality at-bats that resulted in him scoring 3 runs: 2 BB’s and 1 HBP.

The Mustangs travel to Forest Lake on Wednesday, April 20 with a 6:30PM start time; playing under the lights at Schmacher Park.

April 18, 2016 vs. Stillwater

The Mustangs defeated Stillwater 4-1 at Mounds View High School.

Bo Lovdahl started and went the distance, giving up just the 1 run, scattering 9 hits and 2 BB’s while striking out 3. Stillwater put runners on in all but one inning, and Lovdahl pitched well in successfully working out of Stillwater threats that included runners at 2B and 3B in 2 innings.

The Mustangs committed 0 errors on the day, and turned a line drive to Ryan Nickel into a double play at 2B to Erik Holloman to end a threat in the top of the 5th inning.

The Mustangs took advantage of 2 walks, a HBP and an error to score 3 in the bottom of the 1st. Jeff LeMay got things going with a walk, following by a Ross Indlecoffer HBP, and an error on Bo Lovdahl’s ground ball. Nick Lovdahl singled to score the first run, Holloman walked to plate the 2nd run, and Carter Rholl’s single accounted for the 3rd run.

Bo Lovdahl helped his cause with a double to open the bottom of the 5th. A single by Nick Lovdahl and a ground ball from Holden Schmidt scored courtesy runner Joe Hagen with the insurance run for the Mustangs.

Offensively, the Mustangs were led by Nick Lovdahl who was 2/3 with a Run and an RBI, and Bo Lovdahl who was 2/3 with a double. Indlecoffer and LeMay each reached safely 2 times as well. Hagen scored twice, and Rholl and Indlecoffer each produced an RBI.

The Mustangs host Centennial tomorrow, Tuesday, April 19 at 4:30PM in a non- conference game at Mounds View High School.

April 16, 2016 at Chanhassen

Chanhassen defeated Mounds View 10-6 on Saturday at Chanhassen High School.

The Mustangs jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Chanhassen helped the Mustangs with 4 walks, and 2 wild pitches in the inning, and Erik Holloman delivered a 2 out and 2 RBI single to complete the scoring. The Mustangs returned the favor with a pair of errors in the bottom of the 1st inning, and the Storm scored 3 unearned runs to tie the game 3-3 game after 1.

The Storm tacked on a pair of runs in both the 3rd and 4th innings to take a 7-3 lead.

The Mustangs battled back in the top of the 5th to score 2 runs to make it 7-5. LeMay led off with a HBP, and advanced to 3B after drawing an errant throw to 1B. Ross Indlecoffer plated LeMay with a sac fly to right field. Nick Lovdahl got things going again drawing a walk and advanced into scoring position with a base hit by Bo Lovdahl. A Chanhassen error then scored Nick Lovdahl.

In the top of the 6th, the Mustangs loaded the bases, and with a 3-2 count and 2 outs, were a base hit away from tying the game or taking the lead. The Storm worked out of the jam, and put up 3 insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th to take a 10-5 lead.

Following a lead-off HR from Bo Lovdahl in the top of the 7th, Joe Hagen walked to create some pressure. A Dimitri Fatsis bunt looked to be a base hit that would have created a 1st and 2nd situation with 0 outs, but the Storm made an outstanding diving catch and doubled off Hagen to snuff out the rally.

Offensively, Bo Lovdahl was 2/2 with 1 BB, 1 HBP, 2 runs, a home run and an RBI. Nick Lovdahl had 2 BB’s and scored 2 runs. Holloman was 1/3 with 2 RBI, and Ross Indlecoffer had 2 BB’s and an RBI.

Dan Cline started on the mound for the Mustangs, allowing 2 earned runs in 3 innings of work. Matthew Laursen worked 2 and 1/3 innings, and Justin Langer made his varsity debut working a scoreless 2/3 of an inning.

The Mustangs host Stillwater on Monday, April 18 at 4:30PM.

April 15, 2016 at Osseo

The Mustangs defeated Osseo 5-1 in a non-conference game at Osseo on Friday.

Osseo got on the board first with a run in bottom of inning 1, taking advantage of a wild pitch.

The Mustangs evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the 2nd with Bo Lovdahl and Holden Schmidt singling to get things going. Nate Fredrickson’s 2 out RBI single scored Lovdahl.

In the top of the 6th, Mounds View scored 3 to take a 4-1 lead: Ryan Nickel started the inning with a double, and Ross Indlecoffer followed with a HBP. Nick Lovdahl then sacrificed them into scoring position. Osseo then intentionally walked Bo Lovdahl to load the bases with 1 out. Holden Schmidt and James Hayden delivered RBI singles in the inning.

The Mustangs tacked on an insurance run in the 7th when Mike Scholl led off with a base hit. Pinch runner Joe Hagen then stole 2B, and Hagen scored on Nickel’s second double of the day.

Nickel was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI, Holden Schmidt also got 2 hits with an RBI, and Bo Lovdahl was 1 for 2 with a BB and scored a pair of runs. Stolen bases were turned in by Joe Hagen (2), James Hayden and Bo Lovdahl.

On the mound, Holden Schmidt started and went 5 and 2/3 inning for the win. Schmidt pitched well, scattering 6 hits and 1 BB, and striking out 2. Matt Laursen saw his first varsity action, coming in with runners at 1B and 2B, and retired the 3rd out of the 6th to snuff out an Osseo rally with one pitch. Eric Holloman pitched a scoreless 7th to close out the game.

The Mustangs played solid defense, committing 0 errors, and a Bo Lovdahl (5) to Nickel (4) to Indlecoffer (3) double play in the 6th prevented the Orioles from scoring and getting back in the game.

The Mustangs travel to defending state champion Chanhassen on Saturday for a non- conference game at 3:00PM.

April 13, 2016 at East Ridge

East Ridge defeated Mounds View 11-5 at East Ridge on Wednesday. East Ridge moves to 1-1, and the Mustangs fall to 0-2 on the season.

After 2 scoreless innings, the Mustangs scored 3 in the top of the 3rd. Walks by Nate Fredrickson and Erik Holloman started the inning, and aided by a Raptor error, the Mustangs plated Fredrickson, Holloman and LeMay to take a 3-0 lead.

The Raptors got one back in the 4th, and the Mustangs responded with 2 in the top of the 5th with LeMay and Ross Indlecoffer scoring to take a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th.

The Raptors closed the gap by scoring 3 in the bottom of the 5th to create a tight game at 5-4 heading to the 6th. The Raptors then exploded for 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th to create the 11-5 final.

The Raptors knocked out 12 hits and received 7 walks on the day to produce the 11 runs.

Nick Lovdahl started for the Mustangs, going the first 4 innings, allowing 1 run, scattering 5 hits and 2 BB’s, and striking out 3. Dan Cline, Erik Holloman and Trevor Stephan worked the final 2 innings on the mound. Offensively, the Mustangs produced 6 hits, one each from LeMay, Ryan Nickel, Indlecoffer, Nick Lovdahl, Carter Rholl and Nate Fredrickson. LeMay scored 2 runs, and Indlecoffer, Holloman and Dimitri Fatsis scored the other 3. RBI’s were turned in by Lemay, Nickel, Indlecoffer, Nick Lovdahl, and Rholl. Walks were produced by Nick Lovdahl (2), Holloman, and Fredrickson.

The Mustangs travel to Osseo on Friday (4:30PM) and Chanhassen on Saturday (3:00PM).

April 12, 2016 vs. Woodbury

Woodbury defeated Mounds View 6-1 at Mounds View on Tuesday in the Mustangs opening game of the year. Woodbury moved to 3-0 on the season with the victory.

The story of the game was the Royals Max Meyer - he followed up a 5 inning, no hit, and 9 strikeout performance last week with a complete game, no-hit, 8 strikeout performance against the Mustangs.

The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Carter Rholl led off with a HBP, and was sacrificed to 2B by James Hayden. Erik Holloman’s ground ball produced an error and allowed Rholl to score.

The Royals responded with 3 runs in the top of the 4th to take a 3-1 lead, and they added 3 more in the 6th for the 6-1 final.

Rholl and Indlecoffer were the only Mustangs to reach base safely on the day against Meyer; both with HBP.

Bo Lovdahl started and went 5 innings, allowing 2 earned runs, scattering 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 2. Holden Schmidt pitched in relief in the 6th, and Trevor Stephan got his first varsity action in pitching a scoreless 7th inning for the Mustangs. The Mustangs pitching on the day was solid; allowing 3 earned runs and walking just 1 batter.

The defensive play of the game was turned in by Nick Lovdahl who threw out a baserunner at 3B with a perfect strike from right field to end the top of the 5th inning.

The Mustangs travel to East Ridge tomorrow, April 13.
