Gardens and Grounds Windrush is approached off a quiet village lane through smart brick gate piers onto a wide turning circle with a parking area in front of the house. I have personally experienced the support given by the Long Ashton network when my family was in isolation, and I am grateful for the support given. I have also been impressed by how quickly local businesses have been able to adapt and rapidly introduce safe ways to deliver essential goods and services to the communities they serve. It does not form part of the Neighbourhood Plan Pill and Easton Parish Council Abbots Leigh Parish Council October 2020 The Abbots Leigh, Ham Green, Pill and Easton-in-Gordano Neighbourhood Plan Preparation and Process: Response to Local Consultation comments (page 22 of the Consultation Statement) 1 Background on the Community Land Trust and the Neighbourhood Plan. In early 2016 the Parish Councils of Abbots Leigh and Pill/Easton-in-Gordano set up two joint initiatives – a Community Land Trust (PDCLT) and a Neighbourhood Plan. Both initiatives were a response to housing challenges – the first an awareness of the lack of housing for local people in the area and the second the threat of major housing (1000 dwellings) either at Martcombe or at Chapel Pill (which lies within Abbots Leigh) or possibly both. PDCLT, supported by both parish councils, was initiated at an open meeting in May 2016 and became formally registered as an independent Community Benefit Society in August 2016. The possibility of conflicts of interest was discussed and all present declared no interest as landowner or having an option on land that might come forward for CLT homes. At a further open meeting (August 2016) a Board was elected with two Abbots Leigh parish councillors and two Pill/Easton Parish Council councillors.

    Long Ashton Neighbourhood Development Plan Appendices 2 August 2014 Long Ashton Neighbourhood Development Plan 2013 - 2026 Appendices August 2014 Appendix A History of Long Ashton BY RUTH POOLE Published in Bath and Avon Family History Society Journal 107 March 2002 The North Somerset parish of Long Ashton, bounded by the ancient parishes of Bedminster (now in the city of Bristol), Dundry, Barrow Gurney, Flax Bourton, Wraxall and Abbots Leigh and part of the river Avon, comprises the villages of Long Ashton and Leigh Woods, and the Ashton Court Estate and its mansion. Until the parish boundary changes in the second half of the 20th century, Farleigh Hospital, formerly the Bedminster Union Workhouse was in the western edge of the parish, and the former hamlet of Bower Ashton was absorbed into the city of Bristol. Prehistoric artefacts have been found in the parish and there were Iron Age hill forts at Burwalls, near Clifton Suspension Bridge and at Stokeleigh in Leigh Woods. A horde of Roman coins was discovered in Ashton Park in 1815 and more have been found in the village. A large Roman settlement has been excavated at Gatcombe at the western edge of the parish. Wansdyke, a massive earthwork, possibly constructed c .577AD may have passed through the parish. Rev. John COLLINSDON, vicar of Long Ashton (1787-93) and Somerset historian, quoted a deed dated 1310 that referred to Venella de Wondesditch in Long Ashton and he described the route of Wansdyke through the parish. The lower part of Yanley Lane was marked as Wansdyke on the 1885 Ordnance Survey map.

    PIGEONs of Bristol (Richard) This Bristol family seems to have been one of the better educated families of Pigeons (as they consistently spelt their name). Walter Pigeon was a successful solicitor in Bristol. His eldest son Richard also became a solicitor, while his youngest son Henry became a surgeon. Richard's son Henry Walter also became a surgeon and Henry's son John Henry was a medical practitioner. The family was also closely related to that of W G Grace, the famous cricketer. Richard Walter (1832-1887) was widowed in 1863, and a year later he married the actress Henrietta HODSON. After giving birth to a son George Walter Noel, Henrietta went back to the stage in London, openly living with the MP and journalist Henry Du Pré LABOUCHÈRE. After Richard attempted to divorce Henrietta in 1869, Labouchère reputedly paid Richard £10,000 to “shut up and go away”. He and Henrietta were eventually married after Richard’s death in 1887. The living descendants of this family are now to be found mainly in the south-east of England and Stockport, Cheshire. One descendant (another surgeon) emigrated to New Zealand.
