PBIS Insubordination Lesson

LESSON-WHAT IS INSUBORDINATION?

Lesson Objectives:  Students will define RESPECT, DISRESPECT, AND INSUBORDINATION.  Students will list one or two examples of insubordination.  Students will read examples of insubordination, brainstorming ways problem behavior could have been avoided.  Students will assess their performance by using the rating scale.

Procedure: 1. Introduce the lesson by asking students to define RESPECT, DISRESPECT, AND INSUBORDINATION.

2. Use the school’s definitions of insubordination. Have students brainstorm behaviors that might fit the definition.

3. Hand out examples of OMS student insubordination. Students will read examples of insubordination, brainstorming ways problem behavior could have been avoided.

4. Students will list their classes, determine their citizenship grades, identify areas of strengths and think of ways to improve.

What is Insubordination? (What NOT to do to follow the (name of school) Way.)

The following is a collection of real incidents that occurred hear at ______School. All of the incidents could have been avoided if students had only practiced one or more of the School-Wide Expectations (name the expectations here). You know them as ______( insert what you call your PBIS expectations ex: The Seminole Way) Directions: Read the following situations and decide what the student involved could have done (which of the expectations should have been used) to avoid this problem. Write your suggestions on the back of this paper.

1. "****** refused to follow directions and work in class."

2. "****** did not follow directions at the beginning of class, asked to do a packet and did not, called a girl an 'it' was then removed from class and continued to complain."

3. "****** was getting into the cabinet drawers and punching buttons on the microwave. This continued after several warnings. When ***** actually started the microwave, I sent him to the office."

4. "****** was told by the teacher to remove hat and did so until the teacher turned around. ****** put the hat back on and began dancing around.

5. "****** refused to stop talking and responded with rolling eyes and rude tone of voice. I put student in the hall. This is an ongoing problem."

6. "****** refused a direct request from teacher to sit down and quit horseplay in gym."

7. "****** leaned back in chair and continued to do it three times after told to stop. Student also turned around and talked to other students when asked not to and refused to follow classroom directions."

8. "******* was told to spit out gum. She did so but 20 minutes later in class was chewing gum again."

9. "******* has chosen not to follow directions all class period by simply sitting and talking during class rather than doing assigned class work. Student was asked twice to get on task and still refused to work."

10. "****** refused to take a test in class. Student was sent to another room and given a second opportunity to take the test and still refused."
