Looking Thoughtfully at Art

Imagine that you are an art teacher for the grade level of your choice. You must select a piece of art to present to students. You will present the piece of art to students by asking questions about it to elicit thoughtful responses.

To complete this assignment, which is based on the above scenario, complete the following tables in Part I, Part II, and Part III. In Part I, fill out information about the piece of art you selected. In Part II, choose questions to ask the students about the piece of art. In Part III, describe ways to integrate the piece of art into the classroom.

Part II

Review the following questions, which are designed to encourage students to look more thoughtfully at art.

How would you describe this piece of art to a person who is blind?

What questions would you like to ask the artist? Can you find the answers to any of these questions? How?

Does anything in this piece of art remind you of something in your own life?

How do you think the artist was feeling when he or she created this piece of art? How does the artwork make you feel? What is the mood of the piece of art? Pretend that you have the ability to shrink in size so that you are small enough to fit into your favorite piece of art. Describe what it would look like from that perspective. Do you like the artwork more now because you have looked at it thoughtfully? Explain your answer. Do you like the artwork less now because you have looked at it thoughtfully? Explain your answer.
