Course overview

In the United States, much of health care delivery, innovation, and reform is dictated by public and private organizations, who seek to increase health care quality, access, and value. Because organizations (and organizational efficiency) is so central to this mission, the Health: Science, Society, and Policy (HSSP) Internship and Analysis course presents a framework for organization analysis, market overview, leadership, and management. The course lectures and readings provide you with tools and techniques to develop your leadership skills through group work and reflection. The class would be a safe environment to discuss your internship experience and theories you learned from other HSSP coursework.

Each organization effectively operates if its internal operations and strategy are aligned with its goals, objectives, and external environment. Together we will examine the strategic design, politics, and culture of organizations and their tools for action. In the class room we will utilize conceptual frameworks, case studies, exercises, and your internship experience to fulfill the course objectives.

Course objectives As each of you have completed, or currently completing work at a healthcare organization, the main objective of this course is to learn how well is that organization functioning, and to help you understand organization issues.  Through understanding and analyzing the structure, politics, and culture of an organization, you will learn how to assess the fit of organization to its goals, and surrounding environment.  By utilizing various analytical frameworks and tools, and learning about market forces you will learn about the process of making critical decisions and strategies.  The in-class exercise and group work will teach you to manage a fair process, and will help you to recognize your leadership and managerial style.

In the case of HSSP89a, time spent at an approved internship also counts as preparation.

Assignment descriptions Pre-class preparation Case write-ups are short assignments, two to three pages (don’t exceed three pages), font 12 New Romans, 1.5 space line, that ask you to apply the course concepts to relevant cases. The main objective of these assignment is to enrich the class discussion, and to increase your participation. There are six case write-ups that you are required to complete. Each write-up will be structured around a set of questions posted on Latte. Case write ups will be graded and returned to you promptly.

In-class participation Individual contribution consists of your presence in class, your individual comments in class discussions. Missing classes affects your participation grade unless it is a medical or family emergency. While attending all sessions is mandatory, you are allowed to miss one class without affecting your participation grade. But Please contact me a head of time if you are unable to make it to class.

Journals Most of you have completed this assignment before the course. If you are completing the journal during the semester, please submit your entries according to the guidelines and schedule provided to you in your internship approval e-mail. Grading journals is based on completion and timeliness submission. Absent any late penalties, you will receive an “A” for your journal.

Final Essay Final essay is an opportunity for you to demonstrate the skills you acquired through the course by applying them to your own work experience in a healthcare organization. Each student will be required to submit a final essay analyzing the alignment of the strategic design, power and politics, and culture of his internship site to the site’s mission and vision.

2 HSSP89a: Internship and Analysis | Brandeis University | Spring 2017 Tuesday: 5-6:20 pm, G2 Final Presentations Public speaking and teamwork are part of your HSSP experience. By week 2 class will be divided into 6 groups (you will select your group). Each team will present an in-depth analysis on one facet of a healthcare organization (strategic design, power and politics, or culture). The instructor will assign the topics randomly to the groups. Together as a group you will select the site of the analysis (a place that part of the group has interned at). The team, also, will provide a feedback on another team’s presentation.

Each team shall come prepared in session number eleven with clear ideas about the outlines of their final presentation. Please bring any questions you have in mind to the classroom.

How to submit assignments All assignments should be submitted as a hardcopy in class room. You shall email me your assignment if you are unable to make it to class. Please make sure to write your name on the assignment. If you have worked in group list all members of your team as well.

Late policy All assignments are due by 4:55p.m. on the dates noted on Late. No late assignments will be accepted.

Feedback On the final essay, the course instructor will provide a feedback using Microsoft Word’s track changes function
