Thursday, October 6th, 2016 English 11B On-level

TODAY’S OBJECTIVES: Students will examine how the author’s purpose affects his/her use of language and choice of form

AGENDA: 1. Complete warmup #17 on the following quote: “Many times I have failed, but I am not a failure. I have made mistakes, but I am not a mistake.” Name one instance in your life where you have made a mistake or felt like a failure. Do you still feel guilty about that situation, or have you forgiven yourself for what happened? IF you still feel guilty, what are you going to do about it? 2. Read the remainder of Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison as a class. As a group, determine what this story says about the conscience of white society during this post-Civil War period in the South. Write conclusion on study questions and turn in. 3. Finally, write interior monologue from the viewpoint of the dancer or one of the white people in the audience. Try to imagine how he/she looks at the world and wonder what life experiences made him/her the person they are…please note that you don’t necessarily have to approve of their behavior. Write monologue in first person; turn in when complete. 4. Distribute Their Eyes Were Watching God, along with reading schedule, study guide questions and vocabulary; read/discuss Chapter 1 together in class. 5. Using a dictionary and/or thesaurus, define the word, its synonyms and antonym, part(s) of speech, and use in sentence. Teach this word and its proper usage to rest of class.
