At the end of the first semester the student will be able to: Expected Competencies The student will demonstrate competency with guidance based on theory presented in NURS B1. At the successful completion of NURS B1LV the student will have demonstrated required competencies based on the application of the nursing process to the care of assigned adult and geriatric clients in various medical-surgical settings and long-term care settings. VNRS B1LV Behaviors Student Learning Objectives I S A P U N/O Safeguards the client's right to privacy by maintaining confidentiality and anonymity. Demonstrates personal maturity and responsibility by being punctual, appropriately groomed and dressed, and prepared for laboratory setting. Demonstrates self-initiative in seeking out learning opportunities, and in taking advantage of opportunities presented for learning. Professional Behavior Uses appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication to interact effectively with clients and families. Assesses own strengths and limitations and appropriately seeks instructor guidance, assistance or supervision as needed. Personally notifies instructor in all situations when attendance will not be as scheduled. Maintains program's Skills Checklist. Utilizes beginning physical assessment skills to collect an accurate data base on assigned adult and geriatric client. Assesses physiological and emotional needs for an assigned adult/geriatric client in a Assessment medical-surgical setting and intervenes appropriately using the nursing process. Discusses medication being administered to clients stating action, use, side effects, nursing responsibilities and basic client teaching specific to each medication. Begins to interpret meaning of lab reports and observations of clients to determine appropriate nursing action. Recognizes appropriate nursing diagnoses on a standardized client care plan based on the Nursing Diagnosis level of growth and development, the uniqueness of the client, and supported by the data.

Identifies basic nursing interventions to assist the client in achieving the stated goals. Administers all medications excluding intravenous medications/fluids correctly utilizing the "6 rights". Masters medical aseptic technique. Utilizes surgical aseptic technique with guidance. Accurately reports and records all data. Maintains the therapeutic environment including physical and emotional safety of clients. Interventions Provides direct care to adult/geriatric clients. Participates in client education with guidance and direction. Appropriately communicates need for guidance, assistance or supervision in select situations. Completes client care assignments within allotted time. Reports abnormal assessments and errors STAT to instructor/RN. Reports off duty to RN team leader and co-assigned hospital personnel by giving assessment data, care given, special needs or problems of clients. Begins to perform an ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of nursing interventions and Evaluation make appropriate revisions in the nursing approach. Completes a laboratory evaluation at the end of the laboratory experience
