Spanish 1 Syllabus 2013-2014 Course Topics & Chapters by Month

August- Para Empezar – Introduction to course; Spanish-speaking countries; Spanish alphabet, numbers 1-10, giving and asking someone’s name.

September- Greetings, introductions, classroom commands, more numbers, time, body parts, classroom objects, interrogatives, weather, calendars, months, days, seasons. Begin Chapter 1A- What do you like to do? Agreeing, disagreeing, likes, dislikes, Spanish speaking culture: dance and music, Test Chapter 1A.

October- Begin Chapter 1B- Personality Traits, adjectives, word order, what others like (le gusta), definite and indefinite articles, colors, Test Chapter 1B. Begin Chapter 2A- Discussing your typical school day, school activities, ordinal numbers, school supplies, describing your classes, “ar” verbs- conjugating in the present tense.

November- Subject Pronouns, El día de los muertos, Test Chapter 2A. Begin Chapter 2B- Classroom items, furniture, indicating location, prepositions, possessives, using the expression “hay”, the verb “estar”, gender and number of nouns, Test Chapter 2B.

December- Begin Chapter 3A- Discussing meals and beverages, “er” and “ir” verbs, indicating how often, the verbs “gustar” and “ encantar”. Chapter 3A Test.

January- Begin Chapter 3B- Food, beverages, expressing thirst and hunger, expressing preferences, the verb “deber”, quantity, descriptions, plurals of adjectives, the verb “ser”.Spanish speaking countries and capitals, Chapter 3B Test, Semester One Review, MIDTERMs.

February- Begin Chapter 4A- Free time activities, the verb “ir”, telling where one is from, “ir” a + infinitive. Chapter 4A Test. Begin Chapter 4B- Future tense, feelings, stem changing verbs, expressing the time of an event, extending and accepting invitations, test Chapter 4B.

March- Begin Chapter 5A- Discuss families, celebrations, ages, the verb “tener”, possessive adjectives.

April & May- Chapter 5A Test. Begin Chapter 5B- Describing people, how you are feeling, “venir”, “ser” vs. “estar”, setting the table, going to a restaurant, Chapter 5B test. Review for & take FINAL EXAM.
