BRAN Technical Committee Meeting December 15, 2005

Attendees:

Fabian Guerrero, NCAR Alex Hsia, NOAA David Lindblad, CU Paul Williams, City of Boulder

1. Fiber Locates

a. RFI is out now to seven prospective locators. Responses are due December 20. b. Locator will be selected in early January 2006. c. David Lindblad posed a question regarding how FPS is locating fiber on the south side of campus between Baseline Rd and the CU steam tunnel. The conduit contains no locating wire. Paul will follow up with FPS to ask how they have been locating this fiber.

2. Spare Parts

a. Necessary spare parts inventory was ordered and received. The parts are stored at the City of Boulder 75th St Waste Water Treatment Plant per the Disaster Preparation and Recovery Plan.

3. Network Documentation

a. City prepared a new map book for the fiber locator based on City GIS data and distributed this to FPS. b. CAD diagrams were updated and distributed to reflect City projects at Broadway/Table Mesa and on Pearl between 28th and 30th. c. CAD diagrams will be updated to reflect spur at 47th and Valmont.

4. Manhole Inspection

a. City will approach Sturgeon for a quote in April.

5. BRAN Build-Out Options – Discussion from Recent Management Committee Meeting

a. The City made available some preliminary route information for hypothetical north and south loops to be added to BRAN and the Technical Committee discussed the possibilities. Generally, there was consensus in the Tech Committee that while this south loop is an interesting idea, the need for it is not urgent in light of the cost approaching $500,000. b. The City Public Works plans no transportation or utility projects in the next 3-5 years that would facilitate conduit installation along Table Mesa Dr between Moorhead and 55th St. c. NCAR has documentation of the ICG fiber network in Boulder that might allow the BRAN membership to brainstorm on possible deals with ICG for additional fiber. d. CU has interest in providing a new fiber connection along Baseline between Williams Village and the Law Building. e. NOAA has an interest in fiber connectivity to the Table Mountain facility near U.S. 36 north of Boulder. f. The topic of BRAN expansion will be left as a work in progress open to ideas from all BRAN partners.

6. City Wireless from NCAR

a. Fabian Guerrero indicated that NCAR is preparing documentation of their existing wireless equipment inventory and frequency usage for coordination with some new City systems. NCAR is waiting for feedback from the City of Boulder on what we’re proposing to install.

7. City Wireless Broadband Initiative

a. Paul outlined an emerging initiative within the City of Boulder to cooperate with a private enterprise in the installation of a City-wide wireless “cloud” for use by residents, businesses, public safety operations, and municipal government. The City plans an RFI during the first half of 2006.

8. BRAN Technical Committee meetings will be held quarterly from now on rather than every other month.

9. Reminders:

a. BRAN partners aware of construction or maintenance activities that could directly or indirectly affect the BRAN infrastructure should use the bran- [email protected] email list liberally to notify others of dates, times, and details. b.
