“The Lorax”

Answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Create a two step food chain found in the Land of the Lifted Lorax and identify the producer and primary consumer in this food web.

2. In a drawing, describe the ecosystem of the Land of the Lorax. Label three biotic factors and two abiotic factors in your drawing.

3. Identify a population in the Land of the Lifted Lorax and explain why this is a population.

4. Identify each of the following in the Land of the Lifted Lorax:

a. One producer

b. Three consumers

5. Every population is linked, directly or indirectly, with many others in an ecosystem. Disruptions in the numbers and types of species and environmental changes can upset ecosystem stability. Explain in several sentences how a disruption in a population in the Land of the Lifted Lorax disrupted other populations and the stability of this ecosystem.

6. Give an example of a Once-ler activity that depleted a natural resource.

7. How were the roads a key factor in both the town and the business?

8. How did the roads lead to the decline of environmental quality?

9. State three things the Once-ler could have done after building his Thneed factory to maintain the initial quality of the environment.

Biodiversity refers to differences between or within species. Biodiversity also ensures the availability of a rich variety of genetic material that may lead to future agricultural or medical discoveries with significant value to humankind. As diversity is lost, potential sources of these materials may be lost with it.

10. In a paragraph, explain how the decrease in biodiversity caused by the removal of the Truffula trees decreased the stability of the ecosystem in this story.

11. Explain how the activities of the Once-ler and his family modified the ecosystem as a result of the following activities:

a. Consumption of materials

b. Improvements of technology

12. How does the establishment of factories to produce thneeds provide an example of a “trade- off” in this story or video? “The Lorax”

13. List and describe two types of pollution created by the activities of the Once-ler and his family and explain how these activities were detrimental to the ecosystem of this area.

14. Write a sequel of at least three paragraphs to The Lorax. The sequel should explain how the Truffula tree made a come-back through replanting and proper care. The sequel could say what the new managers of the Truffula Tree Company are going to do to maintain environmental quality and at the same time make Thneeds. Discuss what can now be done to clean up/restore the habitat for wildlife. Also make a neat drawing of this improved ecosystem. Ten bonus points if the sequel rhymes.

15. Who will pay for the damage to the environment if these actions you discuss in your story prove unsuccessful? Support your answer completely.
