Course Description
This course prepares students to work with Microsoft Word 2010 in a career setting or forpersonal use. Using courseware that incorporates a step-by-step, project-based approach,students develop a mastery-level competency in Word 2010 and get an introduction to computersoftware and hardware. Students also develop an understanding of fundamental computerhardware and software concepts.
The textbook for this course isSignature Microsoft Word 2010. This textbook is divided into six units. Units 1–3 cover foundation, entry-level wordprocessing skills. Units 4–6 cover intermediate- to advanced-level skills. The chapters within each unitcontain the following elements: • Performance Objectives, identifying the specific learning goals of the chapter. • Introductory material, providing an overview of new concepts and features. • Step-by-step exercises, organized into groups, providing students with the opportunity to practiceusing features immediately after they read about them. • Model answers of intrachapter exercises, conveniently located at the beginning of each chapter. • Chapter Summary, reviewing the main concepts of the chapter. • Commands Review, listing the major commands learned in the chapter. • Key Points Review, a short-answer self-check of chapter concepts. • Chapter Assessments, offering graduated levels of performance-based exercises that studentscomplete without step-by-step guidance. These types of Assessments include: o Applying Your Skills, where students demonstrate knowledge of learned features o Expanding Your Skills, which prompt students to learn additional skills o Achieving Signature Status, a set of more challenging problems
Performance Assessments at the end of each unit include the following: • Assessing Proficiencies: practical computer simulation exercises that require students to makedecisions about document preparation and formatting, providing ample opportunity to apply newfeatures as well as to practice previously learned material. • Creating Original Documents: writing activities that provide students with the opportunity tocompose and format business documents, requiring problem-solving and creative abilities as wellashands-on computer skills.
