Activity 2.1: Working effectively in an organisation

The following activity gives you an opportunity to learn about an organisation's structure, its culture, and its written and unwritten rules; it also focuses on helping you understand the competencies/skills and knowledge required in your job tasks.

Work effectively in the organisation OR Visit the Disability Services Queensland Case Study website. Choose and read one of the following case studies, then answer the questions below: Cootharinga Society of North Queensland Warrina Services Wide Bay Training Alliance . Each organisation has stated its vision in the case study. What approaches did they use to meet their vision? Do you feel that their approaches were successful? Briefly explain why you think they were or were not successful (in 150 words or less) and post your answer to the Activity 2.1 discussion forum.

Activity 2.2: Training options

In this activity you need to: . have a discussion with your supervisor . make notes. If one of your work colleagues identified a need to develop the following skills, what training options would they use (e.g. mentoring training options – in- service course, TAFE course)? It might be topical to add some extra skill deficits, for example: . the need to develop skills in working with specific communities, e.g. Indigenous youth from remote communities, refugee groups ( e.g. Sudanese) or Muslim communities. . the need to develop knowledge and skills in working with specific issues affecting some client groups, e.g. the drought and its effect on families, gay and lesbian youth identity issues, chroming and petrol sniffing, autism, and behaviour problems . the need to develop better report/case notes -writing skills . the need to improve conflict resolution skills . a need for basic first aid skills. Write down the options you would recommend. Post your options to the Activity 2.2 discussion forum. OR Print out your reflections and add them to your Activity folder, to be handed/sent in to your facilitator.
