Lesson Plan 4 Field Trip to Shy Farms Barbara Hanley Shy Bros. Farms 1325 Main Road Westport, MA 02791 (email her) [email protected]

Objectives Students will transition from learning about alternative energies to specifically learning about wind power through the use of wind turbines. Students will also witness composting of organic material on the farm. Vocabulary Wind power – energy brought by wind and turned into power (5 min) Wind turbines – a devise that rotates (like a wind mill) that extracts energy from the wind Have students help define these terms. *****Do this on the bus prior to arriving at Shy Farms*****

MA Frameworks Science Grades 6, 7, 8 Strand: Life Science Topic: Energy and Living Things 15: Explain how dead plants and animals are broken down by other living organisms and how this process contributes to the system as a whole. Topic: Forms of Energy 13: Differentiate between potential and kinetic energy. Identify situations where kinetic energy is transformed into potential energy and vice versa. English Language Arts Strand: Language Topic: Questioning, Listening, and Contributing 2.3: Gather relevant information for a research project or composition through interviews. 2.4: Integrate relevant information gathered from group discussion and interviews for reports. Field Trip Instructions: When students are on the bus, keep them engaged by asking them what questions they can Preparation ask the hosts and have them write the questions in their journals. Make sure that they leave enough space Interview Questions for them to write their answers down. Have one students volunteer to ask the questions ahead of time, but having all the students write the questions and answers in their journals.

Supplies Needed Field Trip (sample) Q’s Reflection Journal Question (10min/10 min): “Do you have a different perspective about wind power after Journals seeing two wind turbines in person and understanding how they work?” Pens/pencils *****Do this in their journals on the bus on the ride back to school*****
