FLAG FOOTBALL UNIT 4TH AND 5TH GRADES

1. Introduction of Flag Football to students. Talk about origin of flag Football Skills needed to play flag football Equipment needed Team Sport versus Individual Sport

2. Skills A. Catching/Throwing of the football Gripping the football to throw it Letting go of the football at a 45 degree angle Letting go of the football in the direction you want it to go Keep eyes on the ball Pull hands into chest with arms slightly apart to catch football

B. Passing Plays – A way of getting the ball to a teammate by throwing the football. It can be a short or a long pass. Must use everyone on the team.

C. Running Plays – A way of getting the ball to a teammate by handing the ball off to A player. The ball is handed off to the player who runs with the ball. Ball is handed off by the Quarterback. Cannot move until the signals are called.

D. Centering the Ball – Hiking the ball to the quarterback. Leave ball on the ground with both hands on it and legs apart Looking at the quarterback. On the word “hike” throw the ball to the quarterback. Make sure that as the center, you stay behind the ball.

E. Quarterback Skills Calls the signals we use: “DOWN-SET-HIKE”. Gets the team in huddles to talk about what play to use.

F. Scoring Touchdown is worth 6 points. Extra Point – (PAT) worth 1 point. G. Starting the Game Ball started at own end of field at the 3rd cone. First week everyone only gets 4 plays to score a touchdown. If do not score a touchdown after 4 plays, the other team gets to take the ball To their end of the field and start at their 3rd cone.

H. Flags Everyone one wears two flags. Flags go on the sides of pants at seams. 2 inches of flag goes down in pants, the rest stays outside of pants. Pull 1 flag “to down” the ball.

I. Fouls: Infractions of the rules for which the ball gets moved forward or backward. Examples of Fouls: Tripping, pushing, hitting, jumping offside.

3. Evaluations: Skills Tests on catching, throwing, hiking the ball, and calling signals. Graded on actually playing with their team. Handout will be given as a study guide. Written test over Flag Football. Test read orally to Sp. ED. Students.

1. As you learn skills for Flag Football, which ones have been easy to do? Which ones have been hard to do? Why?

2. What can you do to play together as a team?

3. Is it easier to be the Center or the Quarterback?

4. What things help you to pull the opponent’s flags?

5. Now that we are playing with 1st downs, is your team able to get 1st downs and work the ball down the field to score a touchdown? Why are you able to do this?

6. Which is easier for you? Catching a pass or doing a running play? Why?
