AE0120-12 Arabia and the Arabs

AE0120-12 – Arabia and the Arabs Map Assignment Ian Straughn DUE DATE: Feb. 7, 5pm, via email

Instructions:

Download the base map of Arabia from the following page on the course website: http://proteus.brown.edu/arabiaandarabs/1567

This is a TIFF file and you will need to open it in an image processing program (such as Adobe Photoshop) in order to complete the assignment. You may obtain Photoshop from the university for your personal computer to use when on the Brown system. For instructions on this use the following link: http://software.brown.edu/dist/sw-win.html

Once you have opened the map you can use the text box feature of Photoshop to put place names on the map in their appropriate position. (one easy way for cities and sites is to use a [.] period followed by the toponym of the place) It is important to pay attention to detail such as what bank of a river the city is located and its proximity to other sites (north of Mecca or slightly southwest).

Once you have completed your map you should save it with a file name that contains your own name. Then you should email it to me at [email protected] as an attachment.

You may collaborate with each other on this assignment. The goal is not to stump you but to have you all to develop a geographical familiarity with Arabia that will be essential for course lectures and readings. PDFs of the powerpoint slides from class are available now on the website. These contain a number of maps for reference.

Note: Many of these places have alternative spellings, some of which are listed below. So as you are looking for them on various maps you will need to think phonetically. List of places to be put on map:
