I. COURSE DESCRIPTION: (as stated in the bulletin, including necessary pre-requisite courses, credit hours) VNSG 1423 Basic Skills, 4 credit hours, 64 theory (classroom) hours, Pre-requisite: RNSG 1208 Co-requisites: VNSG 1226, VNSG 1304, VNSG 1361, VNSG 1405 Mastery of entry level nursing skills and competencies for a variety of health care settings. Utilization of the nursing process as the foundation for all nursing interventions. The course is designed to teach the beginning student the theory underlying basic nursing skills. Application of the theory is taught in the co-requisite course VNSG 1361. Included in this course are exercises in medical terminology and dosage calculations. The student will demonstrate competency in basic skills, identify the steps in the nursing process and how each relates to nursing care and discuss the delivery of basic nursing skills in a variety of health care settings.

A. Report data to assist in the identification of problems and formulation of goals/outcomes and patient- centered plans of care in collaboration with patients, their families, and the interdisciplinary health care team. 3. 3 III. ASSESSMENT MEASURES OF STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: A. Assessments for the Core Intellectual Competencies –

A.1. Reading: Competency in reading will be assessed through student’s reading and understanding of course material and reference books.

A.2. Writing: Competency in writing is assessed through written assignments, care maps, windows, and care plans when applicable.

A.3. Speaking: Competency in speaking is assessed through oral contributions to class discussion and through interpersonal communications with instructors and peers.

A.4. Listening: Competency in listening is assessed through the student’s ability to follow directions, and ability to complete assignments as instructed.

A.5. Critical Thinking: Competency in critical thinking is assessed through student’s ability to discuss the content of required reading assignments, the ability to identify and distinguish between diseases affecting clients, and the ability to proficiently apply the learned material through quizzes, class discussions, group activities and testing.

A.6. Computer Literacy: Competency in computer literacy will be assessed by the student’s ability to complete assigned computer assisted instruction, online testing, and Blackboard course materials.

IV. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES: Methodologies utilized in this course include classroom teaching, audio/ visual presentations, written assignments, computer assignments, role playing, student demonstrations, and class activities as assigned by the instructor.

B. Assignments – (Appropriate due dates, schedules, deadlines) Student will be given module assignments that must be completed and submitted as instructed. No late assignments will be accepted. Assignments consist of reading the material prior to class, Defining the key terms for each chapter, reviewing the key points at the end of the chapter, completing individual quizzes, and group quizzes and participating in class activities and module assignments which include classroom activities as detailed in the Black board course.

Specialty Exams

Angelina College Health Careers Division- Nursing Procedure for Nursing Subject retest

When a retest is required for a specialty exam through HESI (Elsevier), the following procedure will be followed to pay and retake the exam. 1. The retake test score is any score less than 850 (or what is specified in the course syllabus). 2. The procedure for remediation is specified in the handbook and each course syllabi. 3. To register for the retake: a. Obtain a Testing Request from the nursing office secretary. b. The request will be taken to the business office in the administration building. c. Pay $30.00 fee to retest. d. The receipt will be brought back to the health careers office. e. When you come to the test you must bring as your admission the back page of your test scores which show the questions you missed on the test. This is usually the last page of your report. It is called the “Missed Questions”. It shows the question #, specialty, topic, and subtopic. This will be signed by you stating that you have done the remediation for the second exam. See the handbook for a copy of an example page.

VIII. SYLLABUS MODIFICATION: The instructor may modify the provisions of the syllabus to meet individual class needs by informing the class in advance as to the changes being made.
