FIRST DEGREE INFORMATION:

FIRST DEGREE DATE October 28, 2014 PLACE Faith Formation Center, St. Theresa’s Church CANDIDATES REPORT 7:30 PM Faith TIME/PLACE Formation Center CANDIDATE DRESS Jacket and Tie DEGREE START TIME 8:00 PM MEMBER DRESS Jacket and Tie CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE:

Dear Brothers,

Have you ever thought about your role in the fostering of vocations to the priesthood? Do we look at young men in our families or our community and wondered if God is calling them to serve him in this special way?

Surveys of recently ordained priests have found an interesting trend: most priests say they first started thinking about the priesthood at eleven years old or in eleventh grade. It has become known as the 11-11 rule. If Jesus has placed a desire in their hearts for priesthood, no matter what their age, we need to foster that vocation. Encourage them to talk to a priest they admire about what they are feeling.

A priest functions in persona Christi capitas—in the person of Christ, head of the Church. Thus a man who wants to be a priest should love Jesus Christ above all else. And like Jesus, he should have a deep love for the Church, the Bride of Christ. In general, a man who wants to be a priest will find himself drawn to Church teachings and “all things Catholic.”

Often other people will notice a “priest’s heart” in a young man and say to him, “Have you ever thought about being a priest? I think you’d make a good one.” In fact, many men report that they grew tired of people making such comments—but that the encouragement eventually led them to seminary!

Pope Benedict recently spoke about what people expect of their priests. To paraphrase, he said that people do not expect priests to be experts in anything but the spiritual life. Thus, a good candidate for priesthood attends Mass, prays frequently, receives the sacrament of Confession, serves others, and strives to grow spiritually.

A priest brings Jesus to people and people to Jesus. For this reason, a man who wants to be a priest should have a deep concern for the people of God. He wants to help them grow in holiness; he wants to teach them the truths of the faith; he wants to minster to them during the trials of life. The vocation of priesthood is about leading others to heaven.

If you know a young man who has thought about the possibility of priesthood, but does not feel he has all these signs and qualities, don’t despair! All people should strive for holiness. And future priests go through a long and intensive formation period, precisely to help them grow in virtue and be effective in their ministry.

If you know a young man interested in priesthood, advise them to talk to the Vocation Director about the signs above. The vocation Director can help him further discern his vocation. And remember—true happiness and peace depend on following God’s perfect will for our life. If God wants a young man to be a priest, trust in his grace to lead him.

Please pray for vocations.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Mick

Life Insurance As a Gift? The initial reaction for many people when you mention life insurance as a gift is a quick step back and a questioning stare. “How morbid,” they think. While it may seem that way when you first mention it, life insurance is really a thoughtful gift that can be a financial life preserver in tough times. The problem with life insurance is the general perception. Many think ofdeath instead of the great benefits it provides, and the security that it offers – even while you’re alive.. Life insurance shouldbe thought of as a precautionary protective measure for a family unit. The purchase of this product can mean saving your home, sending your children to college, and preserving your spouse’s quality of life in the event of your death. One of the times you may want to purchase life insurance for someone is when a family has a new baby. It’s a great, low-cost way to set money aside for the future (i.e. college tuition, housing, business start-up, etc.). Of greater importance, it ensures these children will have insurance as adults, in case an illness later in life makes him or her uninsurable. Newlyweds are also ideal recipients for life insurance. As they join their lives and financial responsibilities, young couples need to make sure that their early investments are fully protected. If something were to happen to one of them, the other may be faced with serious financial hardship. A life insurance policy is an ideal way to ensure their future and protect their assets. As nontraditional as it may be, life insurance is a wise and caring gift to purchase for many people. Jonathan Pandolfo 609-549-6568 [email protected]
