The Alchemist Unit Plan

Class: 9 ELA & Period: 1,3,5,6, Date: 10-10 to 10-14 Honors per 4 4 Guiding Questions: 1. How does figurative language and sensory description create imagery? 2. What is a personal legend? 3. What is the Soul of the World? 4. Should we listen to signs and omens? How should we interpret them? Are there rules to this? 5. How does everything in the world conspire to help us achieve our personal legends? 6. What is the connection between all things in the world? 7. What is more important: the journey or the destination? 8. What is a hero’s journey?

Objectives: SWBAT . Honors / 9ELA: Create Say/Mean/Matters to explore figurative language, theme, tone and mood. Analyze figurative language and the theory of The Hero’s Journey to better understand the universal themes of The Alchemist.

Standards: 9 ELA / Honors CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Craft and Structure: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or informal tone). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.5 Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.

It required no explanation, just as the universe needs none as it travels through endless time.” To WHOM does this quote refer? 3. What does Santiago see in the sky that he realizes is an omen? 4. What does the omen mean? 5. If Santiago decides to stay in the oasis, the alchemist says what will happen? In 2-3 sentences, paraphrase what the alchemist says to him. (p.123-124)
