Write a single analytical paragraph, analyzing the use of rhetorical devices from one passage from act 4 of The Crucible. Good possibilities include p 129-130 between Danforth and Herrick, focusing on Danforth when he says “now hear me and beguile yourselves,” p 131-132 when Hale begins, “I come to do the Devils work, ” and “ “let you not mistake your duty …”, p139-139 between Proctor and Elizabeth when he says ”Then who will judge me….”, “Would you give them such a lie….”
What is the predominant rhetorical device and how does the use develop theme, character or plot?
Focus on writer and audience. Do not say Miller uses imagery to develop theme.
Arthur Miller uses graphic, diabolical imagery and direct metaphors to develop an angry tone and the theme of the hypocrisy of Danforth and the Puritan leaders as they execute Salem’s’ citizens. (Topic sentence) In Act 1V Giles, an old farmer in Salem has been pressed to death in Salem for refusing to confess. Rebecca Nurse has been hung. Proctor refuses at first to confess. (Context) He cries to his wife, “It is hard to give a lie to dogs.” (Miller, p 136) (Example) The dogs are Salem’s leaders. Proctor compares Danforth and Hathorne to unthinking beasts who kill only to please themselves. (Commentary) He then says, “Would you ever give them this? You would not; if the tongs of fire were singeing you you would not.” (Miller, p 139)Proctor decides to confess but declares that his wife, Elizabeth, even if held over the fires of hell, would not. Miller’s image reinforces the Puritan belief in a fiery hell that burns sinners to crispy extinction and the power that belief has in controlling the Salem citizenry. He mentions the notable noble exceptions of his wife Elizabeth Proctor, and infers that Rebecca Nurse and Giles have maintained integrity in the face of the Puritan fire.
Integrate the quotation using correct MLA context for your example and, briefly comment on:
