Navigator’s Notes

Sir Knights, Family and Friends,

As Thanksgiving approaches I am reminded how much the Good Lord has blessed me. I pray that all of you have a great holiday with your family and friends, and safe travels to all those traveling. This Tuesday I will be handing out checks to our 7 lucky winners of the World Series Pool. In December we do not have a monthly business meeting so our next meeting will be in January. I would like to welcome all our brand new Sir Knights who went to the exemplification earlier this month in Richmond.

God Bless, Rob Wilhelm, FN

Reflection from the Faithful Admiral

Some online dictionaries report each year on what words were looked up the most on their site. For 2005, some of the most popular words were refugee, pandemic, tsunami, and levee. Because of worldwide catastrophic events that year, we can readily understand why those words were checked. The most popular lookup for the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary that year was the word integrity. The definition given is: “firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values.” It's used to describe those who are unwilling to be bribed or morally corrupted. Why was that word on the top of the list? Could it be because integrity is so lacking that many don't know what it looks like in someone’s life? In His Words, God gave us an example of integrity in the life of Joseph. Potiphar had put him in charge of overseeing “his house and all that he had”. When he was propositioned by his master's wife, Joseph refused, saying, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” He knew what God's standards were, and he chose to stand for the right – at the cost of his freedom. Integrity – look it up in Genesis 39. Then live it out in God's strength as members of this great fraternity of ours, the “Knights of Columbus”. In keeping with past articles, God is pleased with work done well. He honors good workers, and so should we. God is pleased with His Knights of Columbus and Assembly 2588.

Fraternally,

Frank T. Mulcahy PFN Faithful Admiral

Veterans Flu Vaccinations

VA and Walgreens Team Up to Provide Flu Vaccinations to Veterans The cold and flu season is upon us and the Department of Veterans Affairs has once again teamed up with Walgreens Pharmacies nationwide to allow all veterans who are currently enrolled in the VA healthcare system to be able walk into any of the over 8000 Walgreens nationally (and the Duane Reade pharmacies in the New York metropolitan area) to receive a vaccination at no cost. Vaccinations will be available through March 31, 2017. Veterans wishing to receive the no cost vaccination simply need to present a Veterans Identification Card and a photo ID, at any participating Walgreens to receive the vaccination. In addition, after the Walgreens pharmacist administers the vaccine Walgreens will transmit that information securely to VA where it becomes part of the patient’s electronic medical record. VA is committed to keeping Veteran patients healthy, and during this flu season, vaccination is the best way to prevent the spread of flu. No matter where you live, visit your local VA clinic or Walgreens to get a free flu shot.

 To find your local VA, visit va.gov/directory/guide/home.asp.  To locate a Walgreens store near you, call 800-WALGREENs (800-925-4733), or go to com/findastore.  To learn more about the partnership, call 1-877-771-8537 or visit ehealth.va.gov/Immunization.asp.

To get more information on flu and flu vaccine, visit publichealth.va.gov/flu or www.cdc.gov/flu.

([email protected]) “SERVING THOSE WHO SERVED…” OUR SYMBOL:

Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree, deem it an honor and privilege to carry our TRIAD EMBLEM, which features The Dove, The Cross, and The Globe. Our Honored Order cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus.

Spiritually, the sacred symbols fashioned on our sword and lapel pin, typify the union of the Three Divine Persons in one Godhead The Most Holy Trinity.

o The Globe God the Father, Creator of the Universe. o The Cross God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind. o The Dove God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of Humanity.

HISTORY: In the early years of the Fourth Degree, members met as part of their councils, mostly after meetings. In 1910, during a reorganization of the Order's leadership, the first Assemblies were created. Additionally the position of Supreme Master was established to lead the Fourth Degree internationally. Vice Supreme Masters lead Provinces and Masters head Districts. This system has spread and flourished as Sir Knights not only serve their local Church through their service to local councils but also their joint efforts in these Assemblies. The Honor Guard, first called for in 1886 was officially formed in 1902, for ceremonial purposes. Since that time, the uniforms of the Color Corps have varied, however all have shared the similar theme of mariners. Most noticeable in today's current uniform is the chapeau worn with ostrich feathers.

MEMBERSHIP: The Fourth Degree ritual added patriotism to the three original principles of the order: charity, unity, fraternity. Any Third Degree member in good standing with at least six months membership in the order – is eligible for membership in the Forth Degree. The primary purpose of the Forth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and love of and loyalty to the knights’ respective countries through active membership in local Forth Degree groups called Assemblies. Forth Degree members must retain their membership as Third Degree members in the local council to remain in good standing.

EVENTS: The first Exemplification of the new Degree was scheduled to be held in the Astor Hotel in New York City on February 22, 1900. However, there were so many candidates the Exemplification had to be moved to a larger venue. Therefore the site was moved to the Lenox Lyceum. At this first Exemplification of the Fourth Degree 1,100 members of the Knights of Columbus, being in good standing "took their fourth." The second Exemplification, held in Boston on May 8, 1900 saw another 750 Third Degree knights join the ranks of Sir Knights. cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus. Once a Sir Knight attains an office, he is entitled to wear the colors of that office until elected or appointed to a higher office, except for the Marshal [appointed by the Master of District] and the Color Corps Commanders [appointed by the Faithful Navigator] who are appointed for a specific term and then revert to their previous colors when that term expires.
