Dear Colleagues

Re: Staff Review and Development Scheme (SRDS) 2011. Information for reviewees.

We are writing to up-date you on the SRDS process for 2011. All staff will have received an e-mail letter (dated 14.03.11) from the Chair of the School Management Committee outlining the SRDS process for 2011. Other than clinical staff, who are covered by alternative review arrangements, SRDS applies to all staff; this includes fixed-term contract staff and early career researchers. This is your chance to discuss your work, your contribution to achieving your team/ departmental objectives and to discuss your job development and career goals.

Your reviewer should contact you and arrange the SRDS review. If this does not occur, contact your reviewer directly or contact Lynne Lennard ([email protected]) who will facilitate the process. We would ask that, where possible, the SRDS process be completed by 31 August 2010, to allow for the moderation of assessment ratings across the School.

To remind you, the focus of the SRDS process is staff development, this should include career aspirations. The basis for the SRDS discussion is to consider the following:-  The individual’s main duties and responsibilities, as detailed in their job summary, and whether these need to be updated.  To review progress over the last year, taking into account specific objectives agreed at previous SRDS meetings.  To develop objectives for the coming year, taking into account individual priorities within the role and where possible how these contribute to wider Department and Faculty priorities.  To consider training and support needs in order to be able to meet objectives.

We have been asked to provide some further guidance for reviewees.

Departmental priorities for 2011 - In order to help reviewees consider how they may contribute to the Department we have attached a document summarising current priorities. This includes the five priority areas identified by the Faculty, alongside the Departmental priorities. You 2 should agree with your reviewer 2 to 3 objectives that are directly related to Departmental priorities and 2 to 3 objectives that are associated with your individual job; the development of the job role and/or career aspirations. Keep your reviewer informed of the progress towards achieving these objectives and undertaking any agreed development activity. Consider requesting a mid-year review to keep a track of progress against the agreed objectives.

Continuing Professional Development for Early Career Researchers – As with all staff, this is the opportunity for the Early Career Researcher to discuss their career plans and needs with respect to continuing professional development with their reviewer. To this end we have attached a copy of the “think ahead programme”, developed by the Faculty’s Early Career Group (ECG) and an ECG feedback form.

Promotions – The reviewee should discuss their job and the development of their job role with their reviewer. In the first instance, the reviewee should discuss promotion with the reviewer and seek guidance with respect to the process and the development of the supporting documentation. It is expected that staff seeking promotion in the 2011 round will have their SRDS reviews during May. Information with respect to the Departmental timetable for promotions has already been distributed (e- mail dated 10.05.11). The absolute deadline for submission to the Human Metabolism Office (DU 35) is 12.00 noon on Thursday 2 June 2011.

Interim SRDS – Reviewees should consider requesting a mid-year “interim” SRDS in order to keep track of their progress against their agreed objectives. This is particularly important for career development.

The HR website provides additional supporting information – check out the “Top Ten Tips” for reviewees (http://www.shef.ac.uk/hr/guidance/srds). If you have any further questions about the SRDS process for 2011 please feel free to contact either Lynne Lennard or myself.

Completed SRDS forms should be forwarded to:- Dr L Lennard/Lesley Keers SRDS 2011 Human Metabolism Office DU 35 Medical School Beech Hill Road

With best wishes

Yours sincerely

Peter Croucher, Head of Department.
