Long 10 Document Path: l:\council\bills\gm\29685ac13.docx 11 12 Introduced in the House on April 11, 2013 13 Adopted by the House on April 11, 2013 14 15 Summary: Gold Hill African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church 16 17 18 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 19 20 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 21 4/11/2013 House Introduced and adopted ( House Journalpage 63) 22 23 24 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 25 26 4/11/2013 27 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE PASTOR AND 12 CONGREGATION OF GOLD HILL AFRICAN METHODIST 13 EPISCOPAL ZION CHURCH FOR ITS LONG HISTORY OF 14 WORSHIP AND SERVICE IN THE FORT MILL COMMUNITY 15 AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM UPON THE OCCASION 16 OF THE CHURCH’S ONE HUNDRED FIFTEENTH 17 ANNIVERSARY. 18 19 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 20 Representatives are delighted to learn that on Sunday, April 14, 21 2013, the congregation of Gold Hill African Methodist Episcopal 22 Zion Church will celebrate the church’s one hundred fifteenth 23 anniversary; and 24 25 Whereas, founded in April 1889 by a group of faithful men who 26 purchased two acres of land for twentyfive dollars from John F. 27 Black of New York, the church has maintained its original location 28 in Fort Mill; and 29 30 Whereas, when the church was begun, rumors abounded of a gold 31 mine in the vicinity, so the founders named the church Gold Hill 32 African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church; and 33 34 Whereas, the congregation has twice been bereft of the church 35 sanctuary through the ravages of fire, the last time in the late 36 1930s, and both losses served to strengthen the resolve of the 37 church members as they rose like the phoenix from her ashes; and 38 39 Whereas, Pastor Diane Belk serves the congregation as its 40 twentyninth pastor in a long tradition of caring and devoted 41 ministers, and the church’s history has been recorded in a Souvenir
[3930] 2 1 Journal for the celebration of the momentous occasion of the one 2 hundred fifteenth anniversary; and 3 4 Whereas the members of the South Carolina House of 5 Representatives appreciate the significant impact the church has 6 had on the Fort Mill community and celebrate with the 7 congregation the church’s one hundred fifteenth anniversary. 8 Now, therefore, 9 10 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 11 12 That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of 13 South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor the pastor 14 and congregation of Gold Hill African Methodist Episcopal Zion 15 Church for its long history of worship and service in the Fort Mill 16 community and congratulate them upon the occasion of the 17 church’s one hundred fifteenth anniversary. 18 19 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 20 Pastor Diane Belk. 21 XX 22
