Presentation

In this 21st century, climate change is a major challenge for all humanity and especially for the African rural communities. The region faces urgent needs to develop strategies for effective adaptation and mitigation through the design of appropriate science-based policies. In this context, the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD) is selected to host a PhD program in the Economics of Climate Change. This program receives financial support from the German Federal Ministry in charge of Higher Education and Scientific Research (BMBF) through the Wascal program (West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use). Wascal brings together two research consortia working together in managing the PhD program, one German coordinated by the Centre for Development Research (ZEF), the university of Bonn, and the other constituted by West African Partners (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Mali Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo).

The Wascal Program activities are conducted in the following areas:

• Climate Systems of West Africa

• Climate Change and Water Resources

• Economics of Climate Change

• Climate change and land use

• Climate Change and Agriculture

• Climate Change and Biodiversity

• Climate Change and Food Security

Objectives

The objectives of the PhD program Climate Change Economics are to: - Train West African leaders for a better inclusion of climate change issues in the policies and sustainable development projects and programs. - Promote an integrated approach to climate change issues - Build capacities to assess the impacts of climate change and develop adaptation strategies; - Promote an operational approach to knowledge in the field of climate change particularly through case studies. Training and Research

The PhD program in Climate Change Economics is composed of two poles: Training and Research.

Module 1: Quantitative Techniques: Mathematics, Econometrics, Data Mining

Module 2: Economic Theory and Climate Change: Macroeconomics, Microeconomics

Module 3: Resources Economics and Climate Change: Environment and Sustainable Development, Theory of Environmental Policies, Introduction to the biophysics of Climate Change, BioEconomics and Green growth, Environmental Accounting and footprints, Integrated approaches to Climate Change and Economic, Modeling, International Trade and the Environment, Economy and Finance of Climate Change, Environment and Health, Collective Action and Environmental Management, Environmental Estimating and Evaluating Techniques

The research component consists of 4 phases:

- Phase I: Preparation and validation of the research project - Phase II: Field study - Phase III: Training in Germany - Phase IV: Final editing of the thesis Entry Requirement In conformity with the entry requirement of Cheikh Anta Diop University, the successful can didate will have a minimum of: -Applicants must be citizens of one of the ten WASCAL member states: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d´ Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal or Togo - Applicants must be holders of a Master II/DEA in Economics or equivalent. - have a an English proficiency able to follow graduate level studies - Gender-balanced selection decision
