Your Name (first and Last) Learns about the 60’s

Topic 3 Topic 4

To prepare for our next novel, S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, Volcano students will research the 1960’s. This information will be shared in class to give students a sense of this time. Students will select four (4) areas of interest, research these areas, and create a poster, PowerPoint presentation, or Prezi presentation to share information with others. For each area, students should do the following: 1. Provide a title. 2. Provide a minimum of three facts. 3. Provide a visual (clip art, picture, drawing, etc.)

Students must provide a MLS style bibliography of research sources. This includes photos. Please feel free to use a web assistant like citationmachine.net to assist. The bibliography can be submitted on a separate sheet, as the last page of the PowerPoint or Prezi, or glued to the back of the poster. Students will have citation information in their ELA interactive notebooks before Spring Break.

Students should select from the following topics: - The Beatles - Corvairs in the 60’s - Elvis Presley - Mustangs in the 60’s - Hank Williams, Jr. - President Kennedy - Paul Newman - President Johnson - Hairstyles for women - President Nixon - Hairstyles for men - Vietnam - Clothing for women - Civil Rights - Clothing for men - Woodstock - Drive-in movies - Gangs - Trucks in the 60’s - Gone with the Wind - Corvettes in the 60’s - Children’ games and activities

No matter what topic selected, the research gathered should be for the 1960’s. For example, we are interested in Elvis Presley in the 1960’s, not his death in the 1970’s. This is a great time for students to use family and friend resources. Students are encouraged to interview folks they know who were alive in the 1960’s for information. Please feel free to also use photos and other documentation as visuals. For example, I have several dresses, hats, and jewelry from my grandmothers that were worn in the 1960’s. These could be photographed and added to projects or brought in to display.
