MIDDLE AGES – CREATING A LORD’S MANOR

You have been hired by Sir Loin of Beef; the 4th Duke of Wellington, to design his manor. Sir Loin of Beef has just been given a piece of land the size of Frederick County. He has asked you to complete 5 of activities below so that his manor can be functioning as soon as possible.

You must complete both of these for the project (REQUIRED) Activity One: On a plain sheet of white paper make a drawing of your Lord’s manor. Your drawing must include the following parts:

Castle, serf’s huts, chapel/church, lord’s fields, serf’s fields, common pasture, mill, pond, road, forest, and creek.

LABEL YOUR DRAWING AND COLOR EACH PART OF YOUR MANOR A DIFFERENT COLOR. YOU CAN MAKE A KEY OF YOU DESIRE.

Activity Two: Write a 250-word description of your castle. Include in your description what each part is used for or how it works. Also, include any methods you have added to keep attackers out. Describe, if you can, the Lord’s quarters, the stables, the kitchen, and the dungeon.

CHOOSE TWO OF THE FOLLOWING Activity Three: On a plain sheet of paper design and then draw the castle the Lord has asked to be built. Label the different parts, such as the moat, well, hall, drawbridge, tower, and church. Color your drawing.

Activity Four: Invent your own weapons that may have been used during the Middle Ages. Draw a picture of it and explain how it works.

Activity Five: Your Lord has asked that you set up some sort of government for the manor. Please answer these questions in complete sentences.

A. What will be the duties of the Lord? B. What will be the duties of the serfs? C. What will be the duties of the priests? D. What will be the duties of the knights? E. What will be the duties of the monks? F. Write down five laws including punishments for breaking the laws. CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING

Activity Six: The Lord has asked you to design a “herald” or symbol for his coat of arms. He plans to make flags with this symbol on it and he also wants to out it on his shields. Your task is to draw a coat of arms and color it in.

Activity Seven: The Lord has asked you to design a suit of armor for his knights to wear in battle. DRAW and LABEL a suit of armor. Labels should be provided for these parts:

Helmet, chest plate, hip plate, upper leg plate, lower leg plate, upper arm plate, lower arm plate, gauntlets, foot plates, shoulder plates, and elbow plates

Grading Directions: Each activity is worth 20 points. The entire project is 100 points. For each activity the grading is slightly different.

Activity One: In order to receive full credit, the student’s product must be colored (5 points), all required parts are completely labeled and drawn (10 points), and everything is spelled correctly (5 points).

Activity Two: In order to receive full credit, the student’s product must be at least 250 words (10 points), no grammar errors (5 points), and no spelling mistakes (5 points). If the student fails to write 250 words he or she will receive a fraction of the 10 points based on the number of words he or she wrote. For example, if the student writes 212 words, (approximately 85% of the writing requirement) he or she will receive 8 points of credit.

Activity Three: In order to receive full credit, the student’s product must be colored (5 points), must have labeled and drawn at least 6 parts of the castle (10 points), and everything is spelled correctly (5 points).

Activity Four: In order to receive full credit, the student must draw a weapon that is realistic to the time period (10 points), write a 2 to 3 sentence description of how it works (5 points), and have correct spelling in the sentences (5 points).

Activity Five: In order to receive full credit, the student must complete all six descriptions (15 points), and spell correctly (5 points).

Activity Six: In order to receive full credit, the student must draw three separate pieces: a charge (4 points), a cadency symbol (4 points), and a kingdom symbol (4 points); the student must include a motto (2 points) and spell correctly (2 points); and color correctly (4 points). Activity Seven: In order for the student to receive full credit, the student must draw each piece of armor (11 points), label each part (4 points), and spell correctly (5 points).
