INDEPENDENT PROJECT INFORMATION

TOPIC OF MY INDEPENDENT PROJECT: A Taste of Korea: Making Bibimbap

TARGET GROUP: Heterogeneous group of 12th grade students. (Male and female, varying levels of ability)

GOAL: Students will gain knowledge about the history and culture of South Korea through research and experience of the cuisine.

OBJECTIVES:

 In teams of 5, students will demonstrate knowledge of South Korean history and culture by producing and presenting an informational poster to class.

 Given a recipe, students will follow procedure to create the typical Korean dish, bibimbap.

STANDARDS:

7.3.12.A: Analyze the human characteristics of places and regions using the following criteria:

• Population

• Culture

• Settlement

• Economic activities

• Political activities

8.4.12.A: Evaluate the role groups and individuals played in the social, political, cultural, and economic development throughout world history.

9.2.12.G: Relate works in the arts to geographic regions:

• Africa

• Asia

• Australia

• Central America

• Europe • North America

• South America

9.2.12.J: Identify, explain and analyze historical and cultural differences as they relate to works in the arts (e.g., PLAYS BY Shakespeare, works by Michelangelo, ethnic dance and music).

DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES:

Class one:

 Warm-up: Begin with a class discussion using a KWL organizer to assess and activate prior knowledge.

 Introduction: briefly discuss my own experience in Korea and show a short tourism video that demonstrates the various aspects of Korean culture that students will be asked to research.

 Jigsaw poster activity: divide students into teams and assign each group to a different topic (history/geography, historical culture, modern/popular culture, food/sports/religion) that they will be responsible for researching and presenting in the second class.

Class two:

 Team presentations

 Present short bibimbap cooking video.

 Students create one bowl of bibimbap per team.
