<p>NAME: Christiana Byrne</p><p>INDEPENDENT PROJECT INFORMATION</p><p>TOPIC OF MY INDEPENDENT PROJECT: A Taste of Korea: Making Bibimbap</p><p>TARGET GROUP: Heterogeneous group of 12th grade students. (Male and female, varying levels of ability)</p><p>GOAL: Students will gain knowledge about the history and culture of South Korea through research and experience of the cuisine.</p><p>OBJECTIVES: </p><p> In teams of 5, students will demonstrate knowledge of South Korean history and culture by producing and presenting an informational poster to class.</p><p> Given a recipe, students will follow procedure to create the typical Korean dish, bibimbap.</p><p>STANDARDS: </p><p>7.3.12.A: Analyze the human characteristics of places and regions using the following criteria:</p><p>• Population </p><p>• Culture </p><p>• Settlement </p><p>• Economic activities </p><p>• Political activities</p><p>8.4.12.A: Evaluate the role groups and individuals played in the social, political, cultural, and economic development throughout world history.</p><p>9.2.12.G: Relate works in the arts to geographic regions:</p><p>• Africa </p><p>• Asia </p><p>• Australia </p><p>• Central America </p><p>• Europe • North America </p><p>• South America </p><p>9.2.12.J: Identify, explain and analyze historical and cultural differences as they relate to works in the arts (e.g., PLAYS BY Shakespeare, works by Michelangelo, ethnic dance and music). </p><p>DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES: </p><p>Class one:</p><p> Warm-up: Begin with a class discussion using a KWL organizer to assess and activate prior knowledge.</p><p> Introduction: briefly discuss my own experience in Korea and show a short tourism video that demonstrates the various aspects of Korean culture that students will be asked to research.</p><p> Jigsaw poster activity: divide students into teams and assign each group to a different topic (history/geography, historical culture, modern/popular culture, food/sports/religion) that they will be responsible for researching and presenting in the second class.</p><p>Class two:</p><p> Team presentations</p><p> Present short bibimbap cooking video.</p><p> Students create one bowl of bibimbap per team.</p><p>ASSESSMENT: http://rubistar.4teachers.org/index.php?screen=ShowRubric&rubric_id=2102286&</p><p>CLOSURE: </p><p>Using class discussion, complete the “learned” section of KWL graphic organizer.</p><p>RESOURCES: (LIST TWO) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px5EHcMgR_Q&feature=related (Korean tourism video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRiSu9UQpe0 (Bibimbap video)</p>
