DEPUTY NURSERY MANAGER FURTHER PARTICULARS OF THE JOB JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Deputy Nursery Manager

Department: Day Nursery

Main Purpose of Job: To support the Nursery Manager in ensuring the smooth running of the Nursery and to take sole responsibility for the Nursery in the Manager’s absence. To act with management interests at all times and to work with honesty and integrity as the Deputy Manager of a harmonious and efficient team.

Relationships:

1. Responsible to: Day Nursery Manager, Home Bursar, Day Nursery Sub-Committee 2. Liaison with: Accounts, Facilities Team, Catering Department, other departments as required.

MAIN TASKS OF JOB:

Support to Manager

1. To support the Nursery Manager by assisting in or taking on a number of managerial and administrative duties such as completion of documentation, DBS checks, keeping records, recruitment, selection, induction, training, supervisions, appraisals and promotion of staff. The Deputy should be a self-starter, able to work independently but also able to confidently seek help and guidance when necessary. 2. To deputize for the Nursery Manager in her absence and deal competently with a wide range of managerial and administrative responsibilities. 3. To work on own initiative to ensure that the Manager has uninterrupted time to deal with administrative and other matters when necessary. 4. To support the Manager in managing nursery budgets and ensuring efficient use of nursery resources, for example cover staff, consumables and equipment. To manage petty cash and authorize submission of claims in the Manager’s absence. 5. To work together with the Manager to ensure that the nursery operates effectively at all times during opening hours, that childcare is available to parents and to assist in putting in place a contingency plan for all unplanned events, such as emergencies or extraordinary weather conditions. 6. To assist in compliance with relevant laws, regulations, policies and procedures, for example Health and Safety at Work, Risk Assessment, COSHH. To prepare relevant paperwork when required. 7. To work as part of a harmonious and efficient team of staff, and to provide leadership and support for members of the nursery team including training, performance management and help in resolving conflicts and misunderstandings. To attend and/or lead regular staff meetings which are out of office hours. 8. To actively promote the safeguarding of children and young people in the workplace in accordance with the College Safeguarding policy. 9. To actively promote equal opportunities in the nursery in accordance with the College Equal Opportunities policy. 10. To ensure the highest standards of care, safety and welfare for children by providing suitable environment for children with various needs. To be aware of any special needs and proactively ensure appropriate action is taken. 11. To organise and oversee the maintenance of nursery records (registers, accident book, children’s files etc.). 12. To ensure appropriate levels of hygiene are maintained in the nursery and that any maintenance issues are promptly reported and resolved. To liaise with the Home Bursar if the need arises to close the Nursery in the event of any severe infectious illness, severe weather or any other major problems with premises that may occur. 13. In consultation with the Manager to show potential customers around the nursery with a view to market the nursery and sell sessions. 14. To liaise with the Nursery Manager and Home Bursar on all issues involving staffing, policy decisions affecting the College, non-routine items of expenditure, and levels of occupancy. 15. To prepare for inspections by external agencies (e.g. Ofsted and Environmental Health) and undertake any necessary follow-up work as required by the Manager. 16. To act professionally at all times and be a role model of good practice and promote the good reputation of Wolfson College Day Nursery. 17. To develop and maintain loyalty and commitment of parents, and build a professional relationship of trust with them and ensure their satisfaction with the nursery service. 18. To have Key Holder responsibilities for the nursery. 19. Other duties necessary for the smooth running of the nursery that the manager may ask from time to time. Childcare 20. To implement and monitor the EYFS framework and curriculum to ensure each child develops within a stimulating environment, making sure the nursery offers an environment which reflects the cultural diversity of the children. 21. To monitor and ensure completion of children’s developmental Learning journeys observations portfolios and trackers. To provide staff with continued support and training in these areas. 22. To ensure that an appropriate system of children’s progress record-keeping and reporting to parents is implemented and updated when required. 23. To ensure all children’s leaving reports and Learning journeys are available for parents when they leave the nursery. 24. To decide, in consultation with the Manager and staff, when places become available, to move children from the Under-2 room to the 2-5 group. 25. To ensure the nursery meets the required standards, ratios and conditions of registration and the College requirements. 26. To ensure correct staffing levels are maintained and arrange staff duty rotas; to provide cover when necessary. 27. To decide when to exclude (and subsequently re-admit) sick children. 28. To liaise with College kitchen to order food items for children’s snacks and teas, to ensure that healthy lunches are offered to children and to inform the kitchen of any children’s allergies to be aware of when preparing nursery food. 29. To order toys and equipment in consultation with the Manager. With the College 1. To attend and prepare reports for meetings of the Day Nursery Sub-Committee. 2. To provide the Home Bursar with such background information and statistics as may be necessary prior to meetings of the Day Nursery Sub-Committee. TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

Appointment: The post is available immediately. It is full time and permanent with a six months’ probation.

Hours: The hours of work are 45 hours per week, including a lunchbreak, Monday to Friday between 8.30am to 5.30pm.

The Deputy Nursery Manager is expected to attend relevant training, Training: which may be outside of working hours. In such instances time off in lieu is normally taken.

Annual Leave 39 days pa including 8 Bank Holidays. Annual leave allowance must Entitlement: be used to cover periods of College closures during Christmas and Easter as well as the nursery closure for two weeks in August.
