She is shown as being born at Horesley, Gloustershire. NSW Government State Records - Immigrant Index 1844-1859 - shows Louisa Hodges, 23 old, arriving on board 'Anglo Saxon', 21.10.1854 together with her older brother William and his family. Generation No. 2 2. JOHN2 HODGES (RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1822 in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England, and died 04 May 1895 in Wattle Flat, NSW5. He married ANN LYNAGH 21 September 1850 in Kelso Catholic Church, near Bathurst, NSW6, daughter of WILLIAM LYNAGH and MARGARET. She was born Abt. 1832 in Navan, County Meath, Ireland, and died 05 November 1906 in 10 Henry St, Bathurst, NSW7. Notes for JOHN HODGES: In 1839, when John was just 17 years of age, he and his brother, Charles, decided to migrate to Australia. There was a scheme call 'The Bounty Scheme' run by the Government in England to encourage young men, providing they met the requirements, would be given free or assisted passage. Charles could read and write and John could only read, but on the shipping records shows 'was probably useful'. They were Protestants and their parents, Richard and Esther Hodges, were still alive and there were other siblings. They arrived in Australia on board the ship 'Aresti' in 1839. John settled into the country very well and in the 1841 census he is shown as residing at Parramatta and was living in the Bathurst area in the late 1840's where he met Ann Lynagh, an Irish immigrant and they were married in the Catholic Church, Kelso (near Bathurst) on 21 September, 1850. According to records, their first 2 children were born on various large properties in the area where John had found work. They eventually settled at Wattle Flat where the remainder of their children were born and John now had an independent butchery. John had kept in touch with his family in England and when he recieved word that his mother had died, he wrote back to convince his younger brother William, who had married Harriet May and now had two little girls, to migrate to Australia. He offered to pay for their sponsorship and also that of his younger sister, Louise, and they arrived on board the 'Anglo Saxon' on 21 October, 1854.

2 On the birth certificate of their son, John at Peel near Bathurst, on 1.8.1857, it states that John was a Butcher by occupation, 36 years of age and married on 21.9.1850 at Bathurst. By 1860, their family had grown to 5, 3 boys and 2 girls, and they were awaiting the birth of their 6th child who would be Clara and she was born at Young and no registration can be found for her birth. Also at that time, Ann had found out that her mother and siblings had survived the famine back in Ireland and John had decided to also sponsor them to migrate to Australia. This was unusual as the cost was very high. Margaret Lynagh (Ann's mother) assisted by pawning whatever she could and secured the necessary references. It appears that John was a very caring person who held no predjudices against the Irish or Catholics, giving no objection to his marriage in the Catholic Church and by his sponsorship of Ann's family. It is possible that by leaving England when he was only 17 he was free of any bitterness. Margaret, Ann's widowed mother, accompanied by her son James and her daughters Sarah and Mary, arrived on board the ship 'Alfred' in 1860. They were met by John and Ann and went onto Young, where Clara was born. Margaret and her daughters appear to have changed their name to Lynch, however, James did not until after his marriage to Ann Fife and his children were born and registered under the name of Lyons. Sofala lies in the Turon River valley, and it was near here at Summerhill Creek, that Edward Hargaves discovered gold on the 12th Feb. 1851. In a short time the population peaked to 10,000 as people flocked to the area. A ramshackle tent city, with dozens of pubs, grew up around Sofala. But by May 1854 the gold ran out and many moved away. However, a year later more gold was discovered at nearby Wattle Flat. Wattle Flat, Sofala and nearby Hill End were thriving gold mining towns and miner's cottages were simple bark humpies. Many Chinese populated the area and the area abounded in Kangaroos, wild brumbies, possums, snakes and bush rangers. The gold was taken to Bathurst under armed escort. It is not known when John and his family moved to Wattle Flat, however, in 1868 their son, Edwin was born there and their last born, Teresa in 1872. Also, in the 1872 'Grevilles Post Office Directory' it shows that John was a butcher at Wattle Flat and his brother William was a Farmer at 'Wyagdon' in the Wattle Flat District. Hodges John 4 May 1895 74y h/Ann; father More About JOHN HODGES: Burial: Wattle Flat RC Cemetery Notes for ANN LYNAGH: NAVAN, COUNTY MEATH IN LEWIS TOPOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF IRELAND 1837 by Samuel Lewis NAVAN, an incorporated market and post-town (formerly a parliamentary borough), and a parish, in the barony of Lower Navan, county of Meath and province of Leinster, 7 miles from Trim, and 23 from Dublin, on the road to Enniskillen; containing 5292 inhabitants, of which number, 4416 are in the town. It is one of the first boroughs established by the English in the palatinate of Meath, and appears to have arisen under the patronage of the family of the Nangles, barons of Navan, who, towards the close of the 12th century, founded here an abbey for Canons Regular of the order of St. Augustine. The town is situated in the centre of the county, and at the junction of the rivers Blackwater and Boyne; it consists of three principal streets, from which several smaller branch of in various directions, and contains about 850 houses, many of which are well built; altogether it has a neat, cheerful, and thriving appearance. The cavalry barracks, on the site of the ancient abbey are adapted for 4 officers and 52 non-commissioned officers and privates, with stabling for 50 horses. The chief trade is in provisions, which is extensively carried on with Drogheda, and seems to have been consequent on the opening of the Boyne navigation from that part to Navan, a line of 15 miles in extent; and its further extension inland, which has been attempted but not yet carried into effect would contribute greatly to its increase and to the general prosperity of the neighbourhood. There is also a considerable retail trade with the surrounding districts. In the immediate vicinity of the town, and closely connected with its trade, though locally within the limits of the adjoining parish of Athlumney, are flax-mills on the river Boyne, affording regular employment, on the 3 average, to about 260 persons, and in the same parish, but close to the bridge of Navan, are some very extensive flour-mills, the property of Mr. Delany. Of these mills, one has five pairs of stones used for grinding wheat only; and the other, called the New Mill, which has been recently erected and fitted up with the most improved machinery, has ten pairs of stones, of which six are used in grinding wheat, and four for oats; attached to these mills is a steam-engine of 30-horse power. There are also some smaller mills in the town, chiefly for oatmeal and a paper-mill upon a small scale, chiefly for the coarser sorts of paper. The distillery belonging to Mr. James Morgan is capable of producing 30,000 gallons of whiskey annually; and on the river Blackwater, and close to the town, was formerly a very extensive distillery, with a mill and corn stores, employing a large number of persons; but the establishment has been for some time discontinued, and the buildings are fast going to decay. The manufacture of sacking, of which this place is the principal seat, is extensively carried on: it is made of tow brought from the North of Ireland, and in the town are from 200 to 300 looms in constant operation, each producing annually about 40 pieces of 60 yards in length. The market, which is the best attended in the county, is on Wednesday, and is abundantly supplied with corn, large numbers of bacon-hogs and porkers, and-with coarse linen, yarn, frieze, and country merchandise. In the R. C. divisions the parish is the head of a union or district, comprising also the parishes of Donaghmore, Ardsallagh, and Bective: the chapel is a handsome Grecian edifice, now in course of erection upon an extensive scale; there is also a chapel at Bective. Near the R. C. chapel is the convent of the Ladies of Loretto, a handsome edifice, attached to which are two schoolrooms, one in connection with the National Board, in which are 200 girls, who are gratuitously instructed by the sisters of the convent; and the other a private seminary for young ladies. The Navan endowed school was founded by Alderman Preston, of Dublin. Ann Lynagh was born in Navan, County Ireland in 1832. Her parents were William and Margaret Lynagh. By 1845 there were five surviving children of the marriage as Ireland was in the grip of famine. Her father and other siblings died and Margaret, now widowed, sought refuge in 'The Poor House' with Ann aged 14 and the remaining four small children, James aged 4, twins Sarah and Catherine aged 3, and Mary aged 1 year old. Conditions were deplorable with families separated, men and boys to one side of the building, women and girls to the other. No contact was allowed and there was severe overcrowding as the famine became worse and cholera broke out. There were many 'Poor Houses' established in Ireland at this time and controlled by a board of Guardians from the local County. These buildings were built after the same style of the English ones, four stories high, a wide entrance hall and mirrored quarters on either side to house the poor. Inmates slept on the floor on straw and holes were drilled in the floor and vents built in the walls to allow for air circulation. Inmates were forbidden to speak to each other and instructed to follow the harsh rules of the establishment. Punishment was severe, food was withheld, beatings and isolation often occurred. Gradually the situation worsened. Poor Houses were built to accomodate 400 but soon grew to over 1000 living in them. The potato crop failed (the Irish basic food) and many people died of starvation and Cholera. Around the same time, it was realised that there was a short supply of suitable young females between the ages 14-18 in the Australian colony to be servants or suitable for marriage. It was decided in order to ease the overcrowding in the Poor Houses, orphans and other girls 14 to 18 would be selected and transported to Australia. The board of Guardians had to bear the cost of getting these girls to Plymouth, where a depot had been established, and of supplying their clothes for the voyage. The 'Poor House' contributed from 6 to 10 pounds for each girl and the balance of the scheme was funded by the Colonial Office. Twenty five girls were transported from the 'Navan Poor House', including Ann, even though her mother was still living, she was classified as an 'Irish Orphan Girl'. They sailed from Plymouth on the ship 'William & Mary' and it was doubtful if Ann would ever see her mother again. Many girls died on the voyage and some jumped overboard and others absconded on arrival when they landed - never to be found again. Ann was just 18. Immigration records shows Ann Lynagh arriving Sydney on board 'William and Mary' on 21 November, 1849 as 1 of 162 orphan females from Ireland. Shipping record [1849 Reel 2136, 2460] shows her age as being 18, calling - Nursemaid, place of residence - Navan, Meath, Religion - Church of Rome, and marked that she could neither read nor write. All orphan females aged between 15 and 19 and she is shown as passenger No.104. Ann was taken to 'Brucedale' near Bathurst. How they travelled I do not know. It was certainly not by 'Cobb & Co.' as it was not established until 1862. Who she was assigned to or where she worked I do not know but she was to met John Hodges and on 21 September, 1850 they were married at the Kelso Catholic Church. Ann had been in the colony less than 12 months. More About ANN LYNAGH: Fact 1: 21 November 1849, Arrived on board vessel 'William and Mary' as Orphan Children of JOHN HODGES and ANN LYNAGH are: 4. i.
