Background Lung Foundation Australia invites applications for the Ludwig Engel Grant-in-Aid valued at $5,000 - to assist research in respiratory physiology. For the purpose of this Grant-in-Aid, Physiological Research is the use of any methodologies directed towards the elucidation of organ function and its understanding in a precise, quantitative manner. The Grant-in-Aid was established in memory of Professor Ludwig Engel who died in 1992. Ludwig Engel was a distinguished Respiratory Physiologist who had made an outstanding contribution to respiratory science and medicine, both by his own endeavours and his influence on his colleagues. Through contributions of his many colleagues throughout Australasia and many other countries, the donations from pharmaceutical and medical technology industry and the Thoracic Society of Australian and New Zealand, a capital base has been established so that an annual Grant-in-Aid can be made.
