We have spent this unit discussing 1984 and government surveillance in modern society, as well as how a main character changes throughout the plot. Remember, we can see how a character changes through what a character says, thinks about, his/her effects on others, his or her actions, and his or her looks (STEAL).

Prompt: In a 5-paragraph essay, show how a character (Winston, Julia, or O’Brien) changes throughout the book as the plot progresses.

Find three pieces of evidence and use well-chosen, relevant, and sufficient facts (3 quotes) to support your comparison/argument. Use your charts and the articles you find to help you develop character traits and conflicts that show how the character has changed.

Sample Outline: 1. Introduction a. Hook b. Title, author, genre (dystopian novel) – link book to your hook c. Context/Story background – a couple lines briefly summarizing 1984 d. Thesis – State the claim that Julia/Winston/O’Brien change in the book in three ways, or with three character traits. 2. Body Paragraph #1 – First trait observed at the beginning of the book in the character through one way of STEAL a. Topic Sentence: Introduce main idea b. 1 Concrete Detail: 1st fact, example, or quote c. 2 Commentary: Your analysis and interpretation of your concrete detail and how it relates to your main idea d. 1 Concrete Detail: 2nd fact, example, or quote e. 2 Commentary: Your analysis and interpretation of your concrete detail and how it relates to your main idea f. Concluding Sentence: Summary of the main idea 3. Body Paragraph #2 – Second trait observed at the middle of the book in the character through one way of STEAL a. Follow Proper Paragraph Form (same as above) 4. Body Paragraph #3 – Third trait observed at the ending of the book in the character through one way of STEAL; this one should show the most change. a. Follow Proper Paragraph Form paragraph (same as above) 5. Conclusion a. Restate your claim/thesis in different words b. Summarize your main points in one sentence each c. Analyze how characters and people change in any story d. Don’t use quotes here, but rely on your own commentary

*Don’t use personal pronouns…stick to 3rd person

*Sample quotation integration: Winston exhibits increased agitation and ultimate betrayal in the torture chamber when he screams, “Do it to Julia!” (184).
